About Melissa Guajardo

I am a leader, connector, coach and facilitator. I specialize in building equity and employee input into finance, HR and operations. I have over 20 years experience in non-profit, public health/food systems settings. My experience has taught me that my passion for public health can serve a wide range of issues. I love working in small to mid-sized non-profits where I can stay in touch with the on-the-ground work while doing what I do best: support employees, develop and maintain organization-wide policies and procedures, and contributing to the overall strategic direction of the organization. My Strengths Finder results say that I'm adaptable, relational, intellectual, a learner and consensus builder. To me that means that I am creative and flexible under pressure, I build long standing and deep relationships, I am introspective and like to collect information, I take care in making decisions, including other's opinions and knowledge, and I love to learn for the sake of learning. I enjoy helping others work through challenges and contributing to a team environment.

    Richmond, California, United States
  • The Center For Cultural Power
    Interim Finance Director
The Center For Cultural Power Mar 2022 - Jul 2022
I supported the Financial operations during the Finance Director's sabbatical. During this brief time I quickly learned the organization's financial systems and structure in order to support the finance department's seamless continuation of service to the rest of the organization. I also had the opportunity to contribute to the organizational leadership team by offering my perspective which allowed me to gain a greater understanding of how thoughtful and caring organizational teams work.
  • California Partnership To End Domestic Violence
    Administrative Director
California Partnership To End Domestic Violence Sep 2016 - Jan 2022
    Sacramento, California
At the Partnership I learned a great deal about operating a membership organization. I was able to use my expertise in accounting, HR, operations and events to move beyond standard practices to practices and policies that centered equity and employee voice. I took pride in ensuring that the administrative functions ran smoothly so that the team of amazing program folks could focus on the important work of being in service to our members and the DV field. I learned that when my values align with those of my organization I can trust my instincts, be creative and improve the workplace.
  • California Native Plant Society
    Associate Director
California Native Plant Society Feb 2016 - Aug 2016
    Sacramento
At CNPS I took on my first fully administrative position. It was a great learning opportunity and I grew in my understanding of the role of an administrator responsible for accounting, HR and operations. I also learned that my heart is truly stuck on public health work and after a short time with CNPS, I was called back to the Public Health community.
  • California Center For Civic Participation
    Associate Director
California Center For Civic Participation Jan 2012 - Jan 2016
When I left HEC is search of a new opportunity I found the California Center for Civic Participation. At the California Center I ensured ongoing operations by developing and monitoring administrative policies and practices including fiscal/bookkeeping, human resources, office management, benefits management and grants management. Through this work I continued to build my expertise in organizational operations. I supported the ongoing mission of the organization by training youth in policy and systems change at the local and state levels and by training adults and youth in youth leadership and youth-adult partnerships. I planned and facilitated meetings and conferences for 10-300 people including all aspects of logistics, on-site problem solving, and facilitation.
  • Soil Born Farms Urban Agriculture Project
    Program Director
Soil Born Farms Urban Agriculture Project Mar 2010 - Dec 2011
I feel lucky to have worked at Soil Born Farms after partnering with them for many years while at HEC. While at Soil Born, I learned about the growing pains that come with a rapidly expanding and in-demand organization. I worked with the management team to improve internal policies and procedures and support a growing staff. I developed policies and procedures that improved accounting practices and human resource with input from the rest of the leadership team, then trained employees to implement. Specifically, I reviewed and revised the bookkeeping manual, human resources manual for supervisors and the employee handbook. I supervised and coached a team of employees, oversaw contracts and managed grants.
  • California Center For Civic Participation
    Associate Director
California Center For Civic Participation Feb 2008 - Apr 2010
I began at the California Center as a Program Manager in 2008 and was promoted to Associate Director in 2009. I moved onto Soil Born to relieve the budget pressure in the midst of the recession and returned in 2012. See the description above for an overview of my work with the California Center.
  • Health Education Council
    Program Director
Health Education Council Mar 2000 - Mar 2008
I continued my professional career after graduate school at Health Education Council where my passion for non-profit work continued to grow. I owe much of my success to the support and education I received at HEC. I was a member of the management team and had the opportunity to learn from other program directors’ experience and expertise. I began to develop my professional image and my breadth of knowledge in operations. My primary responsibility was program development, implementation and evaluation of a suite of nutrition education, food systems, and build environment justice programs. Through this work I became an excellent grant manager and became very interested in budgeting. I supervised a team of 7 employees, facilitated coalitions and collaboration and managed several grants. As a part of the management team, I helped shape organizational policies and procedures, respond to employment challenges, and set direction for the organization. I left in search of a new opportunity to deepen my knowledge and skills.
  • San Joaquin Aids Foundation
    Hiv Educator
San Joaquin Aids Foundation Mar 1995 - Jun 1998
    Stockton, California
I began my professional career in non-profit public health as a health educator at the San Joaquin AIDS Foundation. I began as a volunteer my freshman year in college and after 4 years of volunteering I applied for a position and became a full time employee. While there I learned the importance of a good rapport with my audience, treating everyone with respect, confidentiality and humor. I loved the opportunity the small organization provided to learn the many skills and talents it takes to sustain a vibrant and thriving organization. I can’t imagine a better first job to prepare me for my career and my life. I left to attend graduate school in Boston.
