I began my research career focusing on the molecular aspects of virulence of the marine pathogen Vibrio vulnificus. My post-doc work has focused on the same organism, but has turned into the study of its environmental ecology and specifcally its symbiotic relationship with oysters. I have kept up my expertise in Food Microbiology through teaching undergraduate courses at UNC-Charlotte, but have found that I also love marine ecology. I am a very practical person and am drawn to applied sciences, which is probably why I find both food science and ecology so fascinating.
