About Melissa Nelson
Melissa is a passionate and driven communications professional with a strong interest in health information behaviour. She graduated from Simon Fraser University in 2019 with a major in Communication and extended minor in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies, and is currently pursuing her Master of Library and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia. In her role with the Women's Health Research Institute, Melissa supported many teams funded through Michael Smith Health Research BC with designing, leveraging, and analyzing communications strategies as part of a successful knowledge translation campaign. Example campaigns include #ItsNotInYourHead, #DebunkingDesire, #BePelvicHealthAware, and HIV Made Me Fabulous. More recently, she has supported both the Partnership for Women's Health Research Canada and the Supporting Transparent & Open Research Engagement & Exchange (STOREE) project with knowledge mobilization and exchange activities.Complimentary to her professional experience, Melissa's interests include bias in data and algorithms; algorithmic literacy; addressing inequities facing 2SLGBTQ+ communities; gender equity within women's health research; and the role of social media in health information behaviour.Outside of the office, Melissa has a love/hate relationship with the written word. In 2021, she was awarded as runner-up in Pulp Literature's flash fiction contest for her story 'Solstice,' and hopes to continue sharing her stories with friends, family, and beyond.
