Picture this: You go to an art museum and find yourself within its monochrome white walls, staring intently at a painting, desperately attempting to make sense of geometrical shapes and floating orbs. But no matter which way you put it, you can’t imagine how this can possibly relate to the mystery of life and the existence of a metaphysical realm. You then shake your head in irritation and wonder why you even came to the museum, discouraged from returning. Now, this is where I come in. As a museum educator, I ask you to take a moment and look at a work of art as if it were a puzzle in need of solving. I guide you through a series of questions, asking you to describe what you see and, as in some cases, what you hear or smell. Without any judgment, I encourage you to interpret what you are seeing by drawing from your own experiences and knowledge. Then, with information about the artist and the context of the time period, we slowly put the pieces together and solve the puzzle. My goal is to give people the tools and skills that will make going to museums an enjoyable experience and not an arduous task. As an educator at primary and secondary schools, I have worked with students to build critical thinking skills and learned how to bridge the gap between factual learning and true engagement. I am eager to work with museum goers of all ages and backgrounds, transforming the museum space into a site where knowledge is shared and ideas are challenged.
