Graduate Student Research AssistantUniversity Of Detroit Mercy Jan 2019 - Apr 2019Greater Detroit AreaDesign of a Custom Load Cell to Measure Individual Finger ForcesThis research project has been peer reviewed and published.Due to the complexity of the hand and limited accessibility of force sensors small enough to record individual finger forces; only basic hand models exist limiting our ability to assess hand function. This project aims to develop and build a custom force fixture to measure individual finger forces in various pinch and grip postures. The purpose of this project was to develop a new miniature load cell capable of measuring individual finger forces which is easily configurable to various hand postures. Traditional load cells measure the shear force of a bending beam requiring a thick beam which in turn creates a load cell too large for this application. The miniature, compensating load cell measures the load applied along a plane independent of the load's location. Four strain gages are assembled in a Full Wheatstone Bridge configuration so that one strain gage is on each end of each beam for a total of four strain gages. A Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model and a proof of concept prototype has proven the concept. The FEA model indicates a given load will produce the same total strain independent of load location. When a given load is moved along the top plane of the load cell prototype, the measured load remains constant within 2.5%. -
Graduate Student Research AssistantFord Motor Company & The University Of Detroit Mercy Oct 2017 - Dec 2018Greater Detroit AreaFluid Jet Cleaning of Automotive Camera LensesI worked on a research project at the University of Detroit Mercy that has been funded by a grant from Ford Motor Company. Ford is currently creating autonomous vehicles, and camera and sensor systems drive these vehicles, ensure they stay on the road, stop when needed, etc. But camera lenses get dirty. My research was focused on developing an engineering design tool that can be used to identify the best combination of nozzle position, angle, exit area, and fluid exit speed in order to clean the camera lens in the shortest amount of time, using the least amount of fluid. To do this I am analyzing the physics behind the interacting fluid flows above and across the lens covering, in order to create an analytical model suitable for quick parametric studies which will be used to rapidly evaluate design alternatives using empirical inputs from CFD analyses. I am also creating a 3D CFD model that will be used to optimize the fluid nozzle position and fluid exit speed to provide the necessary cleaning for the camera lens in the minimum amount of time, using the least amount of fluid. I am created my CFD model using ANSYS Fluent 18.2.

As a part of my main project, I developed a testing fixture that holds a linear actuator in a repeatable position from vehicle to vehicle. I also created/optimized FCA's first virtual shift effort model of the poly stable shifter by inserting correct part interfaces and parameters. Outside of my main projects, I gained experience in writing source packages and I developed new automatic transmission shifter development timelines based off of historical data for both modified and carryover shifters. -
