Melissa Perry practised at the Bar in Australia from 1992 to 2013, being appointed Queens Counsel in 2004. She was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2012, joining Inner Temple, and was a non-resident member of Twenty Essex Street, London. Before her appointment to the Federal Court of Australia, she specialised in international, constitutional and federal administrative law, appellate advocacy, environmental law, and native title, and was a NSW Bar ADR Approved Arbitrator. Additional areas of expertise include: technology and the law, climate change law, and human rights. She appeared on numerous occasions in the Federal Court, and State and Territory Courts, and in over 40 matters in the High Court of Australia (excluding applications for special leave to appeal) including:• Akiba v Commonwealth (native title claim, Torres Strait) (2013)• British American Tobacco Australasia v Commonwealth (2012) (validity, cigarette plain packaging legislation)• R v Momcilovic (2011) (validity, Charter of Human Rights (Vic))• Republic of Croatia v Snedden (2010) (extradition)Her doctorate from Cambridge University addressed state succession and international boundaries, and was awarded the Yorke Prize. Subsequently, she advised and appeared in many matters raising international law and human rights issues. Other experience includes counsel assisting the Inspector General of Intelligence and Security in an inquiry in 2011, and appearing in the Fiji Court of Appeal in the constitutional challenge to the legality of the interim military government in 2009.
