Assistant Project Manager

Las Vegas, Nv

As an valuable employee of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Medicine, I am responsible for many aspects of the Radiation Exposure Screening and Education Program (RESEP). This particular government grant offers services to Nevadans who were directly affected by U.S. nuclear weapons testing and works to educate the public on radiogenic cancers and other illness. I work along with the Family Medicine physicians; ensuring that our patients are prep for screening along with answering questions regarding the screening process in its entirety. Throughout the screening process our patients are provided blood work, urinalysis and chest xrays(if eligible). Patients are then given updated educational materials/resources from partner organizations such as (the American Cancer Society, World Health Information, etc). With that being said, patients are provided medical results letters along with a copy of their labs via mail. To ensure that we are reaching those who qualify for the program within Nevada; we conduct outreach trips to several places such as Ely, White Pine, Moapa to name a few. The outreach presentations consist of information about our program and the services that we offer. Another service that is offer to our patients is assistance with completing a compensation application. Moreover, RECA-Radiation Exposure Compensation Act assistance is offered to qualifying participants. We work hand to hand with this particular government program; helping individuals/families file and secure monetary compensation due to developing cancer.

Peer Counselor And Breastfeeding Intern

Women, Infant, Children (Wic) Food And Nutrition Service

1300 W. Lehigh Avenue Philadelphia, Pa 19132

The special supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides federal grants to states for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. I decided to intern at this particular organization as to gain more understanding about breastfeeding. Particularly, "the negative stigma behind breastfeeding" I took on this challenge by conducting a literature review/research about the diminishing rates of breastfeeding moms within the WIC program. My research included interviewing women (pregnant/breastfeeding/non-breastfeeding) individually about their views on breastfeeding, while documenting all answers on Survey Monkey. After my research I compared my findings against expectations. I found that participants views on breastfeeding overlapped my reasoning regarding why many female participants in the program would fail to breastfeed. Research showed over 60 percent of the WIC participants prefer to use formula (cows milk in power form) as a means of feeding their new born baby. To increase the number of breastfeeding moms within the program; I decided to develop a program that addresses the stigma behind breastfeeding while also attacking barriers that many potential breastfeeding moms may face daily; preventing them from actually performing the act of breastfeeding on a consistent basis. Along with the program plan, I created bulletin boards for many of the WIC offices in philadelphia. The purpose of the bulletin board was to educate the moms on breastfeeding, ways to overcome breastfeeding complications, and community resources that can assist with building breastfeeding confidence. I customize breastfeeding brochures that provides insight on breastfeeding positions, what to expect from "baby" while attempting to latch him or her on the nipple, etc.
