The conversion of a derelict and abandoned 19th century convent building into the new home of San Antonio cultural mainstay The Liberty Bar offered me the opportunity to successfully address a challenging project involving the structural and architectural adaptive re-use of 10,000 sf of interior space, the addition of three commercial kitchens on three separate levels, the addition of an elevator tower, and the introduction of a complex and completely new mechanical system. I worked closely with the Office of Historic Preservation to create a finished renovation that respects the context of the surrounding historic district, while fully accommodating a completely modern business enterprise. I was able to adapt the building to the current municipal and building codes, and deliver a completely barrier free, accessible, and delightful space. In 2013, I created a fruitful Statement of Qualifications in response to the San Antonio Housing Authority's RFP. As a result, our office was awarded three projects that will be contracted over a five year period, one of which was the development of a set of design guidelines for private homeowner development in one of San Antonio's neglected neighborhoods. In addition to researching different approaches to neighborhood design, I wrote the set of guidelines to provide maximum flexibility to private developers, while at the same time preserving the contextual integrity of this pre-WWII residential neighborhood. Our deliverable document was a concise yet complete brochure that describes the guidelines, and lays out a pathway to approval for potential developers.
