As an intern in the FLAM program, I worked with Dr. Ram Seshadri’s research group at the UCSB Materials Research Laboratory. My research involved the development of a viable synthetic scheme for the preparation of Mo-based ordered-vacancy double perovskites. I additionally worked on performing a first principles investigation of the electronic and magnetic properties of these compounds in order to rationalize the experimental results. Within the laboratory, my responsibilities included running solution synthesis trials, pressing pellets for solid-state syntheses, working within the glovebox to set up flux growth reactions, and assisting with general equipment and laboratory maintenance. The computational aspect of my research involved the systematic investigation of the effect that various substitutions on different lattice sites would have on the properties of these Mo-based perovskites. I used the VASP atomic scale modelling program to run density functional theory computations to predict their magnetic and electronic properties.
