• Studied the Nudix Hydrolase superfamily to improve SIFTER’s predictions of protein function.
• Used a novel enzymatic assay that detects activity using fluorescence to determine the function of an archeal Nudix enzyme, MM_0920, from Methanosarcina mazie.
• Found that the modified nucleotide 8-oxo-dGTP had activity with this Nudix enzyme.

• Member of Dr. Alan Zahler's Lab
• Investigated the mRNA processing faction MEC-8 from Caenorhabditis elegans to determine if previously identified targets were direct or indirect targets for MEC-8 splicing regulation.
• Project used RNA Affinity Chromatography to located targets bound to the mRNA of MEC-8.
• Tadem Affinity Purification (TAP) was used to isolate possible interacting partners of MEC-8.

• Member of Dr. Alan Zahler's Lab
• Define the role of TSN-1, a co-immunoprecipitator of a known RISC factor Argonaute, in C. elegans.
• Used a stable transgene containing the TAP tag to identify co-interacting proteins and RNAs.
• Project culminated in a senior thesis and a poster presentation at the 2010 RNA Society Conference.

• Participated in an intensive 8 week program rotating with different professors in the fields of biology and chemistry to learn basic tools used in current laboratory research.
