Worked as a contractor helping numerous projects become agile in their delivery, including the myNHS data portal, and the development of the medicines discovery into an alpha. This role was all about making sure the the teams I worked with became self sufficient and able to deliver functioning agile projects on their own. Key areas of improvement included helping teams to become familiar with agile methodology, setting up and running user research sessions, introducing concepts such as affinity sorting, and enabling new product owners to become proficient in delivering their product in an agile manner. As part of the role, I also stepped in to provide maternity cover for a delivery manager, helping to lead another team to successfully deliver a new product in the most lean and agile way possible.Document created in order to help new product owners better understand their roles:

Product owner role for the short-lived BetaLabs project from Boots. My role involved setting up teams to deliver the health product, primarily focussing on delivering a diabetes app to Boots customers, in conjunction with their store-based offering. During my short time here I successfully set up a multi-function delivery team, created a product roadmap, and engaged with stakeholders across the business (both in BetaLabs and the wider Boots teams) to educate them on the product and gain buy in where required.

Working as a product owner for one of the streams of the transformation programme, designed to rebuild NHS Choices, ensuring a user-centred design approach, utilising technology to make access to digital healthcare modern and easy to use. My team were the first to work in this way, following on from the transformation work GDS carried out across government websites. Part of my responsibility was to create this multi-disciplinary team from existing staff. I've also identified gaps in our knowledge and utilised the market to provide guidance and expertise where necessary. We've also been responsible for passing on this knowledge and coaching other teams to work in a similar way.I've helped build a team that works in an agile way with user needs at the centre of what we do. This has involved extensive user testing and research, building prototypes, and managing how we achieve building a usable working product, alongside scaling the product to meet stakeholder expectations. We've followed GDS guidelines on product lifecycle; starting with discovery and working through alpha towards beta and a live service. Along the way we've adapted this methodology to suit our own needs, working with Lean UX principles. Our approach (in line with agile practice) has been to deliver iteratively, meaning we've been able to demonstrate rapid progress via blogging, show and tells, and presentations to various boards and conferences. I've attended government service manager training, which has helped to establish a context for how agile transformation works within a public sector environment.I've developed my understanding of how agile can be applied in an area where it hasn't been used traditionally. I've also managed a product backlog, liaising with stakeholders to deliver the right product, helped set up principles and processes for how we can manage and deliver transformation in a healthcare environment, and been vocal in ensuring what we're doing gets noticed.

In addition to leading on the syndication product, I took on the responsibility for managing and developing the search product for NHS Choices, delivering rich, tailored search to 2 million people a month. As well as maintaining search, I was responsible for driving the search product forward, making sure it responded to everything our users expect from it. This involved negotiating new deals with existing providers, and working with new partners to bring the search solution up to date, using technologies such as semantic enhancement to provide rich, related search. I also worked with our user research team to carry out wide ranging analysis of our service with users, ensuring we're focused on delivering a search function users want to use.I presented at the Google Atmosphere event, outlining how and why we used the Google suite of products to make our search as modern and useful as possible, and how search within a health context can benefit from current technologies, enabling us to leverage things such as semantic enhancement to make user search a better experience. On the syndication side of things, I was responsible for designing and delivering a new version of our API, which became the central pillar, not just for partners, but for the new version of NHS Choices. I also grew the syndication team, to include business development and executive roles, now responsible for creating new partnerships, and ensuring that NHS Choices remain at the forefront of delivering targeted health information to partners. As part of this role, I engaged with development and test teams to begin implementing agile ways of working.
