Profile bio

About Dr Michael Haápio,Phd

My PhD research is based on : analysis of adaptation strategies to the impact of extreme environmental events, including climate change in the Pacific: A case study of two communities in the Solomon Islands. The strategies include ; (i) adapting household income net worth as a measure against impacts of climate change, (ii) transformation of rural communities: lessons from a local self-initiative for building resilience in the Solomon Islands (iii) assessing education as adaptation tool for climate change (iv) identification of limits and barriers to transformation (long term adaptation) (v) and evaluating wantok system (social capital system) as form of climate change adaptation at rural communities. The study found that; building capacity through strengthening the local household network is critical to building adaptation. The utility of wantok system, a form of local social capital or cooperation system is reported as an effective option to building long-term resilience to extreme environment events. This cooperation system appears to be a good model to consider when planning and implementing adaptation strategies in vulnerable communities in the Pacific. The study found that vulnerable communities should adapt a ‘transformation concept’, as a long-term adaptation strategy by enlargement of climate engineering and ecological resilience concepts. Lessons from the experience at Keigold and Mondo communities (Site 2) suggests that policy makers and NGOs should also consider local initiatives embracing transformation as a way to building long-term adaptation to climate change. The thesis also assesses education as a tool to assist long-term adaptation. It further identifies and analyses barriers to adaptation that authorities should consider when planning and implementing adaptation strategies at local level. Key Words: Adaptation, climate change, development, extreme events, education, resilience, rural communities, transformation. Wantok system.
