Since November 2022, Mark has been Manager of Renewable Energy Policy with the Department of Industry, Energy and Technology, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Dr. Hunter joined the core public service of Newfoundland and Labrador in June 2009 as a Program and Policy Development Specialist with the Post-Secondary Education Branch of the Department of Education. In his work with the Department, he was primarily responsible for providing policy advice related to Memorial University issues. In 2017, Mark served as acting Director of the Literacy and Institutional Services Division, and Superintendent of Private Training, during a transition period after management reorganization that occurred Government wide in 2017, returning to his previous role when this was completed. Mark also was privileged to accept a secondment with Digital Government and Service Newfoundland and Labrador for six months from September 2020 to March 2021, where he served as a Program and Policy Development Specialist and Access to Information Coordinator. Prior to joining Government, Dr. Hunter worked as a contract instructor in history with Memorial University and as a historical census methodology researcher with the Newfoundland and Labrador Statistics Agency. Dr. Hunter's PhD focused on the political economy of competing economic policies in the Atlantic during the 19th century. Mark is an internationally recognized expert on historical maritime and naval education and training; non-state actors; international economic relations; ports; the historical Newfoundland labour market and fisher employment strategies in the early 20th century. In his free time he volunteers in the local St. John's arts community when possible. As a hobbyist, Mark has been an Amateur Radio Operator since 1988 with a particular interest in experimental and Earth observing environmental satellites.
