During my internship at Capital One Auto Finance, I joined the Dealer Risk team, a group tasked with a crucial responsibility: safeguarding the integrity of our massive auto loan portfolio, which handles approximately $70 billion in loans annually. My specific focus was on trigger optimization and creation. These "triggers" are essentially metrics and thresholds designed to flag potential dealer malpractice, prompting further investigation when surpassed.Our team's primary toolset for this endeavor was a robust data analysis framework built upon Snowflake SQL for data extraction and Python for in-depth analysis. We used this framework to rigorously examine our existing triggers, identifying areas for refinement and developing entirely new metrics. Our objective was two-fold: maintain the current scope and effectiveness of our dealer investigations while simultaneously increasing dealer collection rates by an ambitious 10%. Through careful analysis and strategic trigger design, we projected that our work could contribute to an additional 10% increase in collections.This internship was an incredible opportunity to apply data analysis techniques to a real-world financial challenge with high stakes. My work directly contributed to mitigating risk within Capital One's auto finance portfolio, driving home the importance of robust data analysis and strategic risk management in maintaining the value of a company's assets.
