I completed a 13-month Industrial Placement with Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, working in the Test and Development (T&D) Design group. Reporting directly to the Head of T&D, I was responsible for the end-to-end design, development and delivery of test rigs and fixtures to facilitate structural testing of car components in the T&D lab. Additionally, I contributed to Pit Equipment projects which focused on the development of trackside equipment used by the race team on race and test events.Key highlights:• Collaborated with composite designers, machinists and T&D lab technicians to design static and dynamic homologation test rig assemblies. These proved the car’s safety structures were compliant with FIA standards for critical assemblies including the nosebox, roll hoop and rear impact structure (RIS).• Independently designed and modelled single-axis suspension leg test fixtures for proof and fatigue testing in preparation for W15 launch. • Responsible for the mechanical installation of a new gantry control cabinet for trackside use – liaised with electronics engineers and trackside operations to ensure all stakeholders’ requirements were met. This involved designing and assembling metallic, Rapid Prototype (RP), and composite components, optimising for structural integrity, lightweighting and ease of maintenance. • Conducted design reviews to present progress and receive feedback from relevant stakeholders. • Volunteered for six race weekends as a video-clipper to support competitor analysis. Obtained footage to support on-event decisions and sporting appeals, to capture competitor pitstop performance and aerodynamic behaviour for the aero performance group.

Key highlights as a member of the Vehicle Dynamics sub-team include:• Completed technical drawings instructing manufacture of car components including the rear hub, front and rear rockers. • Redesigned front rocker to improve driver vision by reducing overall dimensions whilst maintaining motion ratio. • Redesigned suspension tabs for welding onto the chassis to suit updated suspension hardpoint coordinates in SOLIDWORKS. • Co-led Lap Time Simulation event submission - an iterative process seeking optimal car setup in IPG Automotive – data recorded and analysed in Excel.

I completed a 10-week summer placement with Titan Motorsport and Automotive Engineering. Rotating through technical departments across the business, the experience gave me insights into the full product development lifecycle for high-performance automotive components and assemblies.Key highlights:• Four weeks in the machine shop: operated HAAS 3-axis CNC milling machines and shadowed setup and operation of 5-axis DMG MORI machines. This rotation included a stint with the inspection team – exposure to manual metrology techniques, Hexagon CMM operation and visual QC checks.• Four weeks in Assembly: assembled gearbox housings and steering racks according to technical assembly drawings.• Two weeks in the Design Office:o Modelled components in CAD (Autodesk Inventor) and produced technical drawings to client specification. o Modelled and conducted FE analysis (Nastran) for rack bar abuse test rig fixture.o Programmed and wired an automated turntable mechanism with an Arduino Due board for 3D part scanning capability.
