Literacy is the key to more than education, it is the foundation of our ability to self-identify and self-idealize. My role as an educator has been defined by my students’ need to bridge the various gaps in their conceptual, academic, emotional, and social development. Because these gaps in understanding often come hand-in-hand with adversity, my role has been to aid in centralizing otherwise marginalized students and populations. The act of education becomes,then, the act of seeking justice. In this way, my students’ access to literacy becomes paramount. In all my various roles, understanding new concepts and their nuanced vocabulary has been the most engaging aspect of my skill development. In any field, I hope to invigorate one’s understanding and their drive to understand more. Literacy and meta-cognition, then, combine together and allow students individualize their own education.
