For two years I filled the role of Logistics Manager for the Super Rugby franchise the QLD Reds. Unlike a more common rugby management structure, the Reds do not have a listed Team Manager; so my role filled this space, and more. In this role, I was the first point of call for all issues, needs, and enquiries related to the St. George QLD Reds Super Rugby team. From managing the team’s training schedule, to booking and managing the travel itineraries, ordering and stocking team training equipment and clothing, my role was to ensure the smooth running of the team off the field to generate success on-field. I worked closely with both the players, medical and coaching staff and I was the main congruent between the rugby department and the corporate sector of the QLD Rugby Union organization. As a young person elected to fill this role, the challenges were many but I met them head on and always found a solution. Managing the needs, requests and, at times, the demands, of 40 professional rugby players and 20 staff, many of whom were the same age or older than myself, is not a role which can be taken lightly. I always approached every day, every game, every challenge with an open mind and a strong work ethic. As a result I accomplished a successful two seasons managing a professional rugby environment and am confident I could apply the same practices to any professional environment and achieve the same success. During my time in this role I managed the match day requirements for Super Rugby home matches - including the 2011 Super Rugby Grand Final – managed the ticketing and membership requirements for the 2011 season, dealt daily with the member enquiries, some of whom have been members of the QRU for almost half a century. As my time in this role progressed, so did my responsibilities, which began to encompass not only Super Rugby home games, but also rugby operations for all events held at Ballymore, the home of QLD Rugby. Schoolboy rugby matches, club rugby, fan days, ticket sales and other significant events for QLD Rugby were mine to plan, manage and deliver. It was in this capacity that I developed my ambition to be involved in High Performance Management. I developed skills in organization and event management, as well as strengthening my attention to detail. There were times when my crisis management was called in to play and not once did a crisis get out of hand or have any effect on the positive outcome of an event under my management. Through this role, I made connections with key stakeholders within QLD Rugby and SANZAR, relationships that were developed further in my role as Logistics Manager.
