Help Desk Specialist/System Administrator

Portland, Maine Area

In September of 2006, I began a position at Martin’s Point Health Care as part of their Helpdesk. I brought my experience in the IT industry and quickly became an instrumental member of the team. I designed and implemented procedures for cloning Dell PCs and laptops using images, completed various tickets covering an array of software and hardware problems, and traveled to Portsmouth once a week to support a satellite office, managing my own time and solving whatever problems arose. I supported an industry-leading pioneer application of digital health records and moved freely amongst Doctors, Nurses, and their Managers solving their technology problems while also assisting System Administrators with networking tasks, security implementation of Group Policy Objects, and administering servers. With the System Administrator team I configured and supported VPN’s with satellite offices and roaming users. I implemented and supported WSUS servers and verified security updates to computers. As part of a 4-person Helpdesk team, I supported over 200+ computers and users. Because of my previous system administration duties at the City of Westbrook, I made it clear that I wanted to join the system administration team and would eventually like to focus on computer security within the company. While with the company, I went from working the Helpdesk to completing my MCSA for server 2003 and being on the 4-person System Administrator team gaining over 11K in my salary within a year.

Sep 2006 - Sep 2007

Technology Support Specialist

Westbrook, Maine

In January of 2001, I beat out over 800 applicants for the Technology Support Specialist position. My position became more that of a System Administrator where I not only support the City's desktops and users, but also its servers and infrastructure. I led the process of putting laptops in the Police Cruisers in Westbrook, I led the process of moving the City’s website to a new host with tools accessible by all the departments. I also upgraded and built three servers from NT 4.0, to Windows Server 2000, and then again to Windows Server 2003, and I was instrumental in migrating to an active directory environment, as well as moving from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003. In addition I installed and configured Terminal Services and specialized VPN software (Net Motion) to work with the Police Laptops in the cruisers. I convinced the City that performing a Network Security Audit was in their best interests and started the ball rolling in procuring the funds from grants for this audit to occur. During this time I administered 6 Windows 2003 servers and one Sco Unix 5.05 Server. I was responsible for supporting 110 computers spread across 8 buildings and 300+ users. What’s more, I maintained and configured SonicWall firewalls and SonicWall VPN’s. My daily support consisted of troubleshooting and repairing a wide range of computer hardware and software. I ran the local bulletin board Cable Access Channel 3 for 3 years, worked with other City Departments in guiding their technology choices, and implemented Cisco Wireless technology. As part of a 2-person IT Staff, I had co-decision making ability with the IT Director, as well as made purchase decisions, managed my own time, and suggested directions for our department’s growth. In April of 2006 as part of the consolidation process municipalities were going through, the City of Westbrook made a move to combine all of its IT positions through the Westbrook School Department, effectively eliminating my position.

Jan 2001 - Apr 2006

Service Technician

Portland, Maine Area

As a Service Technician for Pro Search, Inc., a recruitment company, I was placed for a short-term contract at Healthwatch Technologies. I worked directly with the System Administrator to help keep the servers and the network running smoothly in a Windows NT 4.0 environment. I was responsible for keeping all PCs in the company running smoothly and efficiently, as well as recommending maintenance and upgrades. I also supported an Oracle 8 database environment.

Aug 2000 - Jan 2001

Pc Technician

Harrisonburg, Virginia

As a PC Technician at Bell Industries, it was my job to receive direction from our Services Coordinator and go to various corporations who were our clients. Once there I would solve problem ranging from software and hardware incompatibility issues to network connectivity issues, to printer problems. Most of our clients were Novell network based with some NT authentication as well. The hardware problems I encountered ranted from failing RAM and hard drives to hardware driver configuration and installing new hardware into machines. The software problems I encountered ranged from solving incompatibilities with Novell Netware clients and their service packs. This could also take the form of solving Win9X registry errors or installing and configuring a host of business software applications (MS Office, Word Perfect Suite, Novell’s GroupWise (5.2), etc. I was also the initial support level for the networks—taking care of problems not requiring the expertise of our CNE or MCSE. I solved login problems ranging from failing NICs and Cat5 cables to resetting passwords and permissions using NWAdmin. In addition, once a week I would go to GE Fanuc Automation outside of Washington DC and deploy Dell PCs and laptops running WinNT 4.0. This involved configuring them and getting them on the network, getting laptops configured for dialup capability to log into their network via GE Extend (a proprietary software that allowed authentication to the network through Compuserve). While there, I also helped with the overflow from the Helpdesk resulting in me going to user’s desks to solve whatever hardware or software issues they had (problems with their Proxy Server, MS Office problems, failing hard drives, computers locking up, etc.).
