Presentation of a design program for students completing their Masters of Architecture focused on the development of a substantial collection-based art museum and education facility of around 6000 m2 in a large regional city. Issues examined included the history of collections and art museums, visual arts practice, museology and exhibition design as well as community engagement and art museum operations. Contact time was one day a week and included a program of 12 illustrated presentations dealing with art museums' "presence" and presentation, typologies, the nature of exhibition space, artists' "placement" of their work and curatorial "integrity".

Consultancy on museums and galleries provides client advice for museum professionals on strategic planning, facilities development, security planning, operational procedures and risk management issues. Principal experience and expertise cover areas of art museums and gallery design, services and operations, project definition and development, visual arts, cultural artefacts and architecture exhibition practice and project management of artist installations and construction works in museum sites. Between 2013 and 2021 Michael Barnett was Art Collection Manager for the Griffith University Art Museum while also continuing to provide consultant advice on art museum development and operations in his role as principal consultant at Gallery + Museum Consulting Services. Managing the Collection included registration, preventive conservation and installation of works from Griffith's holding of more than 4,500 items acrossthe University's five campuses between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Occasional architectural assistance on a number of design projects and conservation studies and providing presentation drawings for publication for the small academic and research practice of Andresen O'Gorman based in Brisbane. Both Brit Andresen and Peter O'Gorman taught tin the Architecture school of the University of Queensland while specialising privately in small residential projects, with Brit Andresen awarded the AIA Gold Medal for outstanding contribution to architecture and education in 2001. Association with the firm included sessional teaching assistance in design and history and theory across all years of the UQ Architecture program as well as placements at the Queensland University of Technology, Bond University and the University of Tasmania in Launceston.

The Strategic Development and Special Projects Unit, previously the Building Development Unit, reported to the Director on issues relating to the Gallery's major building expansion program, ongoing facilities requirements and strategic issues relating to the site and surrounding urban development. The unit served all professional areas of the Gallery and acted as client representative for the duration of the Millennium Arts, Queensland Gallery of Modern Art building project. Involvement included:- Client Consultation, Project Definition and development of the Functional Brief;- Advocacy in the development of the Millennium Arts Cultural Precinct Master Plan;- Development of and Client Advocacy through the Architect Selection Competition;- Client Advocacy on Procurement Method and Construction Tendering;- Client Advocacy through Design Development and Construction Documentation with the Architects;- Development and Tendering of the Furniture Fittings and Equipment (FF&E) Schedule; and- Project Delivery and Hand-Over.Features of the Project included:- A major extension of the Cultural Precinct to include new entrances to existing buildings to a new Public Forecourt;- Integration with existing centralised services systems and plant;- A new, stand-alone 25,000 sq. m. Gallery building including conservation laboratories, installation workshops, two cinemas, multi-media galleries, a research library, education areas, a children's gallery, 6,000 sq. m. of exhibition gallery, two restaurants, a shop and generous public foyers and lounges;- New entrance to the existing gallery building including redevelopment of existing loading facilities, workshops and back of house staff facilities; - Temporary relocation premises for gallery staff; and- Strategic planning for organisational development and staff recruitment, consolidation and development of organisation-wide ICT systems and forward outlook operating budgeting.

As part of the exhibition planning team for the first three Asia Pacific Triennials of Contemporary Art staged in 1993, 1996 and 1999 my core responsibilities were to negotiate and manage planning for international visiting artists to realise works within the Gallery and elsewhere. Each exhibition included up to 40 artists works created on site with preparatory development taking up to 6 months, including feasibility and materials investigations, risk management, engineering and timing individual attendance as part of the overall exhibition installation program.

Design development and project management of exhibition installations for major projects in the Queensland Art Gallery including the rehang of the Permanent Collection Galleries (1989 to 1991), "Treasures form the Shanghai Museum" (1990), "Imperial China" (1993), "Matisse" (1995), "Paris in the Late 19th Century" (1997) and "Indonesian Gold" (1999). Most of the exhibitions covered more than 900 sq. meters, involving works on international loan with high design values for the fit-out and presentation of the works of art incorporated.

Self-directed practice in painting ceramics and printmaking for commercial exhibition solo and group presentations offered by the Ray Hughes Gallery beginning in Brisbane in 1985 and then in Sydney when the Gallery opened there later that year. Highlights included participating in the 1990 exhibition the Gallery presented as a satellite to the Venice Biennale of that year and undertaking a four-month Australia Council artist residency in its Tokyo studio, Japan, 1990-91.
