About Michael Barnett

Michael Barnett has been involved in the various fields of architecture, museum design and operations and the visual arts since graduating from the University of Queensland in 1983.He worked for more than 20 years at the Queensland Art Gallery in areas of exhibition design and project management, facilities development and strategic planning. Key projects included managing international visiting artists projects for the first three Asia-Pacific Triennials of Contemporary Art (1993-1999), developing and delivering the project for the Gallery of Modern Art and substantial redevelopment of the existing Robin Gibson gallery building opened in late 2006 with the completed facilities transforming the program delivery potential of the organisation. He has since provided consultant advice on a number of new art museum projects including the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart and the critically-acclaimed Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth in New Zealand. From late 2013 till December 2021 he was the Art Collection Manager for the Griffith University Art Museum. During this time he continued consultant work including briefing, function and operational advice for development of the new Rockhampton Museum of Art, opened in 2022, and the State Square Art Gallery proposal for Darwin.A graduate in Architecture, Michael has also worked in small-scale practice with the partnership of Andresen O'Gorman and then Brit Andresen, provided sessional teaching in Architectural Design and History at the University of Queensland, the University of Tasmania at Launceston, the Master of Architecture program at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the Soheil Adebian School of Architecture at Bond University and has produced many architectural illustrations for publication. Most recently he conducted a "Masterclass" in Art Museum Design and "institutional architecture" as part of the Masters Program at the School of Architecture, University of Queensland (2022-2023).In 2007-2008 Michael also managed a commercial gallery for Ray Hughes in Sydney after being represented by the Ray Hughes Gallery as a visual artist for 15 years between 1983 and 1998.
