Michael Bell’s career encompasses extensive experience in both the independent and public-school realms, including governance of non-profit independent and charter schools. His tenure at Miami-Dade Public Schools included a variety of roles, ranging from classroom teacher to Assistant Superintendent responsible for the implementation of the district’s choice programs, magnet programs, charter schools, International Baccalaureate programs, and vouchers. Concurrent with that time, Mr. Bell served as an advisor to and grant reviewer for the U.S. and Florida Departments of Education — as well as provided testimony to the U.S. Senate on school choice. Subsequent to his years with Miami-Dade Schools, Mr. Bell served on the Board of Trustees of Fisher Island Day School (FIDS) and as Chair of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Advisory Council. Currently, Mr. Bell serves as Board President of the Academy for Innovative Education Charter School. Beginning in August 2014, Mr. Bell served as Head of School at FIDS until his retirement in June 2022. Previously held positions at FIDS included Assistant Head of School and Director of Admissions. Michael Bell resumed his role as a member of the Fisher Island Board, effective July 2022.Florida born, Mr. Bell attained a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from Florida International University, a Master of Science degree in Reading Education from Nova Southeastern University, and a Specialist in Education degree in Computer Science from Barry University. Mr. Bell enjoys expanding his commitment to education through his various roles involving independent-school governance and operations. Travel and reading are pastimes, which inform his role as a lifelong educator.
