My career began with AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1981 as a designer of telephone products which grew into a role in managing how design documentation is communicated to our manufacturing partners. This then grew into leading the engineering records organization which included traveling to AT&T locations across the United States as well as locations in Mexico, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand.In 1997, I joined USA Group (acquired by Sallie Mae in 2000) where I continued my role in technical documentation. That role led to me transitioning into technology consulting at Sallie Mae. I then began to expand my breadth of responsibilities to include enterprise consulting, coordinating the technology components of mergers and acquisitions, and implementing new technology solutions.My role expanded in 2008 to lead a technology organization at Sallie Mae where we implemented Enterprise Content Management (ECM) and Business Process Management (BPM) solutions. I led an organization responsible for: Distributed Computing & Reporting (DCR), Enterprise Business Analysis, while continuing to support corporate M&A activities. The focus of my team was on business-enabled technology solutions as ultimately this is the core value of technology.In 2014, as a result of a major restructuring of Sallie Mae, my responsibilities grew significantly. In addition to my continued management of DCR and Enterprise Business Analysis, I added the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) environments and the Business Intelligence (BI) organization. I also managed the technology team in support of our Marketing organization's data driven marketing campaigns.In 2020, my leadership role pivoted again when I was asked to create and lead a new Enterprise Data Governance organization at Sallie Mae. This was a true enterprise-wide approach encompassing data discovery, cataloging, lineage, ownership/stewardship, and data quality. While the implementation of a program of this magnitude will be a multi-year effort, this will be an ongoing approach to how we use/manage/govern data rather than a project with a finite start and end.In May 2022, I officially retired from Sallie Mae. It's been an incredible journey of 41 years--16 years with Bell Labs and 25 years with Sallie Mae. In a word, I've been blessed--blessed to have been a part of two incredible companies doing great things, and blessed to have known and worked with some truly talented people. I now turn my attention to community service, recreation, and embracing whatever this next chapter in life brings.Be Safe...Be Well...Be Happy-Mike
