About Michael Bright

Prior to nursing, I worked as a manufacturing planner for a large high-tech company from 1979 -1992. My job as a planner was to coordinate all aspects related to the manufacture of specific customer orders including the scheduling of both projects and programs, calculating the manufacturing manpower hours for the life of the program/project, as well as scheduling and initiating the purchase of all materials required for the life cycle of the build. After I was laid off from Litton, there were no jobs that fit my qualifications available and I was usually vastly overqualified for the positions I was applying for. I had an opportunity to move to Texas and join a touring band/s which I worked at for the next seven years. I had an opportunity to travel the U.S., Canada and Europe where I was very fortunate about some of the traditions and cultural practices of the people I met along the way. Following my foray into the jazz world, I applied to and was accepted by the York University University School of Nursing. After graduating Summa cum Laude, I accepted a position in Cardiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch. I returned to Canada three months later when my father who had been diagnosed with cancer and required home palliative care, which I along with other family members provided. During this time I was involved in a serious MVA which left me with a fractured clavicle and five broken ribs. Unknown to me at the time was that I also suffered serious damage to the vast majority of my vertebrae I took a Registered Nursing position in long term care. I worked as the Senior RN. where I was responsible for 250 residents as well supervising all employees involved in patient care. I worked closely with the residents, physicians, and families as well as our employees to ensure that our residents received the best are we could provide. Around five years after the MVA, I began experiencing serious back and neck pain. X-ray results showed moderate to severe OA in nearly all of my vertebrae which was compounded by degenerative disc disease which resulted in great pain. I also was informed that I needed a hip replacement. I left my job and applied and was accepted to the Masters program at Ottawa U with a full scholarship. I withdrew after the second semester when my elderly mother, needed skilled nursing care for the next eight years, during which time I took multiple online courses and specializations to remain as current as possible. The surgery was postponed due to COVID. I hope to return to the workforce in Public Health once I am fully recovered.
