Colombo, Sri Lanka

Responsible for the following:-the development, promotion, delivery and quality control of British Council professional learning/training products and services for public and private sectors in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. -the strategic leadership and professional development of seven training consultants, PTC deputy manager, and attendant support staff.Achievements include: 1) The Professional Training Centre (PTC) became an acknowledged centre of customer service-training excellence - I arranged for consultants in the team to be qualified as customer service coaches with the UK Institute of Customer Services (a first in the British Council network -see attached media). I recognized the need for high-quality customer service training - not least in the booming tourism industry - achieved through international collaboration with British Council HQ in London and the British Council Corporate Training Unit in Singapore. 2) Asked by Simon Taufel and the ICC (International Cricket Council) to develop a bespoke English Language Skills training course for elite cricket umpires in South Asia, I oversaw the development, staffing, and successful delivery of the course in 4 countries. 3) Commissioned by British Council APTIS exam services. I led on a groundbreaking benchmarking study of workplace language needs in Sri Lanka. This was subsequently used in BCs worldwide. 4) Through a thorough assessment of communication needs, I made groundbreaking in-roads on positioning the PTC as a bespoke skills provider for the region's booming high-end tourism industry, catering for some of the prestigious resorts on the Island.

Hanoi, Vietnam

Academic Manager and Lead on a high-stakes intensive language improvement and skills development programme for Vietnamese government officials seeking entry to post-graduate university programmes abroad. It involved management of several stakeholders: the Vietnamese Communist Partythe British Foreign Office and British Council, Hanoithe Vietnamese military who were hosting the residential course on their facilitiesa team of 13 British Council teachersThe 300 participating officials comprised of scientists, educators, doctors, police, judges, diplomatic service staff. I revamped the incumbent systems (materials and pedagogy) to raise number of candidates achieving IELTS band score of 6 + by 500%

Krakow, Poland

Academic management of British Council Krakow Teaching Centre courses:-Teacher Training (11 full-time CELTA courses per year)-Young Learner education; -Adult education;-English for Academic purposes;-Corporate Training Services;Involving the leadership and development of a team of 15 British Council staff.In addition, I undertook a 6-month holding post as British Council Director, Krakow: leading on representational work for the British Council and sharing good practice with analogue European cultural/ educational institutions.Achievements include: 1) I was instrumental in expanding the centre's portfolio. For example, BC Krakow became one of the busiest CELTA training centres in the world; 2) The centre was awarded a 95 % score on the British Council's own rigorous internal teaching quality audit; 3) The centre expanded its operation to take on partner premises in the city.

Bogota, Colombia

Management of the British Council Colombia's Learning Resource Centre: provided cross-sectional support for nationwide English Language Teaching services. This included assessment of state-school teacher training, support for EAP/ Exams Services in the tertiary sector - delivery of lectures to universities and New Product Development. .

Japan

Management of the Prime Minister's Education UK initiative - a Japan-wide academic programme designed to prepare and guide Japanese students into UK tertiary education (2 types of presessional course - short and long). As part of a Tokyo-based role, I coordinated Education UK services nationwide (Nagoya, Osaka, and Kyoto), successfully innovating and delivering a high-quality service in an intensively competitive market.As a teacher a personally handled a diversified teaching portfolio taking care of contracts with the British and Australian embassies and one-to-one lessons with top government officials. And working with BC colleagues on a contract with a medical university in addition to pioneering a writing programme for post-graduate students at Hitotsubashi University and taught ESP/EAP classes for foundation students at several Tokyo universities. I also taught British Council's literature course. I was twice chosen to showcase teaching at the British Council's Tokyo centre: performing model lessons for visiting British Members of Parliament and the Head of British Council world-wide teaching operations. I starred in a Japanese news documentary on English language training (aired on prime-time Japanese TV). Working with British Council colleagues, I pioneered a link with a school in Yokohama in which we devised new task-based English language syllabus. (See research paper)

Seconded to the Thai Ministry of Education to evaluate the nationwide English Resource and Instruction Centres (ERICs) teacher training programme. Involving visits to 12 Thai provinces, the final report fed directly into a government White Paper on Ministry of Education funding for the following: 1. State-school English language teaching;2. State-school English language teacher training support;3. Cascade training - as used with ERICs - as an adaptable tool in national curricular reform.Awarded a Thai Education Minister citation for my contribution to national education reform; awarded the highest BC performance evaluation rating of exceptional.
