Community Organizing focuses on fixing broken social systems, bringing about meaningful changes to peoples’ lives, and empowering vulnerable or oppressed populations. A Community Organizer is responsible for uniting people to work together to solve social problems and make the world a better place. Elected in 2012 to represent District 2 in Salt Lake City's Westside. The Utah State Legislature assigns to each locally elected board of education control of the public schools in its district. Therefore, the Salt Lake City School District Board of Education is a political subdivision of the state and derives its powers from the state constitution and acts of the legislature. The board has all of the powers assigned to it by law and regulation to meet its statutory responsibilities. It may perform all of the following duties, as well as others legally prescribed and permitted:• Prepare and adopt policies, procedures, rules, regulations, or bylaws, as appropriate, for the governance of the districtand its schools.• Establish tax rates each year and submit them to the county legislative body according to statutory procedures.• Prepare and adopt a budget for each fiscal year and file it with the county legislative body as required by statute.• Acquire, hold, lease, sell, and manage the use of real and personal property in the name of the district.• Sue and be sued in the name of the district.• Employ by contract and set salary schedules for the superintendent and business administrator and approve the contractsand salary schedules for principals, teachers, and other employees of the district.• Evaluate the effectiveness of the district and its programs by developing and monitoring the progress of the district-wideStudent Achievement Plan, by approving and monitoring the progress of individual School Improvement and LAND Trustplans, and by distributing available funds through the annual budgeting process.• Evaluate the performance of the superintendent and business administrator, and approve evaluation methods for other district employees.

A Public Servant, experienced in addressing and meeting the needs of transit passengers, property owners, elected officials and civil servants of the various government agencies throughout Utah Transit Authority’s (UTA) service area. While at UTA, for the past twenty years responsibilities included managing and resolving issues that impeded bus service (was a Bus Operator the first two years at UTA). Responsibilities included approving proposed bus routing for operational feasibility. The approval process involved test driving the route to ensure it met all of UTA safety standards, local ordinances, state law and federal regulations; worked with communities and local government agencies on the implementation of new or modified bus routes. Duties also included reviewing and approving /rejecting requests for bus stops (install, relocate or remove) in UTA’s service area. Effectively maintained a positive working relationship with federal, state, county and city elected officials and staff to implement / sustain an efficient and reliable bus service to the communities within UTA’s service area. Successfully responded to passenger, community, governmental (including UTA employees) complaints and concerns about bus service; resolved all issues raised pertaining to the movement of buses or placement of bus stops. As the designated Project Manager for anticipated disruption of bus service (i.e. construction detour, Transit Oriented Development projects, bus bridge incidental to train accidents, evacuations etc.) acted as liaison /coordinator for UTA’s Operations, Planning, Capital Development, Facilities, Customer Concerns, Transit Communications Center and Emergency Response Departments.
