Michael Connor is the founding Executive Director of Open MIC, a non-profit organization that works to foster greater corporate accountability in the technology and media sectors, principally through shareholder engagement. Working with sustainable (SRI) investors, Open MIC identifies, develops and supports campaigns that promote values of openness, equity, privacy, and diversity – values that provide long-term benefits for individuals, companies, the economy and the health of democratic society. Current Open MIC initiatives address issues such as algorithmic accountability; content governance, media manipulation and election interference on social media platforms; online privacy; and network neutrality.Michael helped launch Open MIC following a distinguished career as an award-winning media executive, entrepreneur and journalist with extensive experience in television, print and the Internet. A former reporter for The Wall Street Journal and correspondent for ABC News, Michael’s journalism has received numerous honors, including two national Emmys, a Columbia-duPont Award, a Writers Guild Award and a nomination for an Academy Award. He is called on frequently for expert commentary on media issues by major news organizations, including NBC News, CNN International, CNBC, ABC News 20/20, USA Today and NPR. Michael is also the owner and Editor of Business Ethics Magazine, an online magazine that covers the fields of ethics, governance, corporate responsibility and socially responsible investing.Internationally, as an executive at Dow Jones & Co., Michael was instrumental in the development and launch of Asia Business News (ABN), a Singapore-based pan-Asian TV network, and later served as Managing Director of European Business News (EBN), a London-based pan-European TV network. These two networks were later merged with CNBC and formed the distribution backbone of CNBC International.Michael has also served as a Senior Vice President of Cablevision Inc.’s pioneering video-on-demand service for the cable TV industry and has advised on media strategies for a number of leading global brands, including the Walt Disney Company, Hearst Corporation and Standard & Poor’s.Michael is a member of the board of the Center for an Urban Future, a think tank which serves as a catalyst for sustainable policies that reduce inequality and increase economic mobility in New York City. He also serves on the board of the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development in Arkville, N.Y. Michael is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and lives in New York City.
