We are directly involved in patient care while working with an RN and under the direct supervision of EM to ensure the best patient outcome possible. Some duties include: Triaging patients prior to assessment, performing ALS interventions including IV access, blood draws, oxygen therapy, ECG monitoring, medication administration, intubation, Interosseous access, splinting, and more. Documentation of patient care using EPIC. Collect laboratory samples and run laboratory tests such as: CBC's, CMP's, cultures, and more.

My career began in Cameron, a rural town 60-minutes north of Kansas City. As an EMT I learned BLS skills, how to interact with patients, and the complexities of healthcare systems. After advancing to Paramedic I transported patients to rural ERs or Level 1 facilities; dependent on their clinical need. Transports lasting up-to 120 minutes and requiring on-going evaluation to prevent patient decompensation. Frequently patients were sedated and ventilated allowing fine-tuning of patient assessment strategies.

Transport lasted 30 minutes or more, and allowed the development of strong patient-provider relationships. The patients required a sympathetic ear, decisive care, and simple explanations for complex procedures. While employed I was elected to represent union members in labor/management issues and appointed to a committee tasked with creating new patient-care protocols and ensuring aged protocols were kept up-to-date with current guidelines.
