Customer service has always been a passion of mine. And it dates back to my first job as a newspaper carrier where it was important to me that each of my customers felt valued. In those days, I rarely lost a customer, and when I did, more often than not it was because they hadmoved.I've learned that customer service is a key factor in customer retention, and customer retention is one of the most important factors to the success of any business. Surprisingly, a lot of companies focus their attention on new customer acquisition. While acquiring newcustomers is important, especially when you are a brand new company, customer retention is in my opinion often a more important metric to focus on.Sales and marketing also play key roles in customer retention. I know it's obvious that marketing to an existing customer is often easier and more cost-effective because the customer already has brand awareness. There is less need to attract and educate the existing customer.Businesses often see higher conversion rates when selling to existing customers vs. to new customers.I'm a fan of marketing genius Jay Abraham, who said: “There are only three ways to increase your business: 1. Increase the number of clients. 2. Increase the average size of the sale per client. 3. Increase the number of times clients return and buy again."Provide the customers value, and they are more likely to make future purchases. Make customers feel appreciated, and they are more likely to recommend or endorse your brand.My 16 years in the insurance industry brought me experience in all three areas of sales, marketing, and customer service, as I gained a great deal of knowledge in customer retention. In addition, during the past three years I embarked on a journey to learn and build ane-commerce business from scratch which has led to my first-hand education in building brand awareness and to the understanding and challenges of new customer acquisition.
