About Michael Curtis

Over the past 18 years, I have worked as an educator in a variety of settings and circumstances.I have spent the majority of my career in a classroom - both in a non-traditional environment like a Montessori school - and in traditional public schools. Regardless of the name on the front of the building, my philosophy has been the same - to have a positive impact on my students. In order to do that, I need to build relationships and help young people understand that I am there to help them as individuals. I believe the key to good teaching is that personal connection, helping students see the importance and long term benefit of learning whatever subject it is you're teaching. Helping people see how the lessons are valuable to them - beyond the letter grade in that course - is the key to building trust and respect. I've also taught in more unique circumstances. As a drama club sponsor, I used theatre and the arts to help kids understand what makes them human, how to relate to other people, and how to work in collaboration with others. Some of those skills were similar when I coached multiple sports, using the practices to help instill values like sportsmanship, teamwork, and empathy into my kids. The most unusual teaching settings I had were during the 15 years I ran a student travel program. This group allowed me to share the world, different cultures, unique experiences, and countless opportunities for connecting with new people and unfamiliar ways of life with the kids in my care. Some of the best moments on these trips to Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America were when we all had our comfort zones stretched just enough to learn new things about ourselves. These adventures taught all of us so much, because it wasn't just about visiting famous landmarks, but about becoming new and improved versions of ourselves with life lessons we could take back home and share with our families, schools, and communities. The success of my travel program led me to other amazing experiences. Partnering with EF Tours for all those years, I was invited numerous times to lead PD workshops, sharing my experiences with other educators from around the United States and helping them build similar programs in their communities. Knowing that a little effort on my part would lead to more teachers and students getting to explore the world and gain insight and empathy into different people with foreign customs and lifestyles was exhilarating and have been some of my favorite experiences in my career.
