Michael D. Email and Phone Number
I am a social worker (since 1976), a sociologist (since 1996), and a social activist (since 1966). I earned my B.S.W. in 1978 from Adelphi University's urban ANSWER program. After an MSSW at Columbia (1980), I worked for over 10 years as an advanced generalist practitioner of occupational social work, including directing union-based member assistance programs in New Orleans, New York and Philadelphia. Also a sociologist, I am an active social theorist. In Humanity and Society, in 2019 I published, "A needs-based partial theory of human injustice," showing how oppression, dehumanization and exploitation create systematic inequality in the opportunities people and communities have to address our human needs: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/epub/10.1177/0160597619832623. In 2016, the Encyclopedia of Social Work (http://tinyurl.com/zpuj4k9) published my 14,000 word overview of theories of human need, and I published "The moment of microaggression: The experience of acts of oppression, dehumanization, and exploitation: https://works.bepress.com/michael-dover/8/. Beginning in 1991, during my 12-year residency in the Doctoral Program in Social Work and Sociology at the University of Michigan, I was a National Institute on Aging Pre-Doctoral Fellow for five years and did a preliminary examination and survey research on older adult volunteer and voluntary association participation. My dissertation was on the social system of real property and the history of the property tax exemption in Ohio's urban areas. In 2008, I was co-author with the late Barbara Hunter Randall Joseph of the first-ever entry on human need in the Encyclopedia of Social Work, and I published a chapter in a CSWE book, Diversity Education and Social Justice: Mastering Teaching Skills. The article contained a typology of three sources of injustice which arose from his teaching: oppression, dehumanization, and exploitation. My current research is an extension of my recent AAUP Academic Blog post, Ending Institutional Racism in Higher Education: https://academeblog.org/2020/07/09/ending-institutional-racism-in-higher-education/A member of NASW since 1977, I was co-convenor of the Bertha Capen Reynolds Society in 1985. In 2011, I served as co-founder of the Cuyahoga County Conference on Social Welfare in 2011 (www.naswoh.org/cccosw). I served as editor (2012-2017) of Reflections: Narratives of Professional Helping (www.rnoph.org). Co-founder of Welcome in My Back Yard in 1995, I am currently re-launch this proven campaign: www.wimby.org.
