Communications Strategist
Leawood, Kansas, United States
I served in the Academy’s Member Communications department from November 2017 until April 1, 2024, at which time my position was eliminated as part of an internal reorganization. My initial job functions included building news story webpages, formatting images for publication, checking stories for accuracy, generating potential story ideas, writing occasional news stories, and supporting the Public Relations department. My job functions shifted substantially over time, with greater focus on story creation and content delivery. My areas of expertise also expanded to cover several aspects of patient care and public health, with a specific emphasis on clinical guidance, health equity, COVID-19, vaccines and immunizations, behavioral health, obesity, lifestyle medicine, and substance use. My responsibilities in this role included:• Writing member communications pieces for publication on AAFP.org,• Supplementing member communications pieces through additional channels (including social media posts, targeted member emails, health alerts, and chapter communications),• Directing members to related resources on AAFP.org and the Academy’s companion website, FamilyDoctor.org,• Working with AAFP members and other sources to provide statements and review news stories for completeness and accuracy,• Working with content strategists to develop and execute communications plans for assigned funded and non-funded projects,• Working with members of other divisions and departments to ensure on-time production of requested deliverables, and• Assisting other team members as needed. As the department’s role in the Academy changed, so did my job title. I was originally hired as a communications specialist, then promoted to associate editor. Following an internal reorganization, my title returned to communications specialist; I was later promoted to communications strategist.
