We are building on our work with Housing Older Women advocacy group to develop designs for a pilot project on a brownfield site in Banyo, a middle ring Brisbane suburb with walkable streets, great amenity, and good connections to the city and airport.

The education committee provides connections between students, graduates and the architectural profession.Our current projects are focused around curating and developing resources to assist students and graduates on their pathway to registration. Enhancing student and graduate practice perspectives better prepares them for a life in the profession and improve employability through targeted advice and strategies. We are keen to expand this remit to providing advice to practice as to how mentoring their graduate cohort can be more effective and improve engagement with their practice.We advocate for the value of design and articulate this to the next generation of students. In part we do this through our Architect for a Day activity that we are growing to become part of the growing network of open house events around the state.We are always interested in hearing about new ideas and keen to bring on new members with a passion for education, architecture, and advocacy and are willing to roll up the sleeves to help work on and lead our initiatives. Brisbane

Second Chance Programme (SCP) is a local volunteer run charity supporting women on the pathway to secure housing. SCP distributes funds to shelters and programs to fill the gaps between other forms of support. Founded by Marjorie Morton and Dale Spender over 24 years ago, it continues to thrive and provide much needed support to women and children in need.A primary fund raising event I have been organising for the past 14 years is the annual sleepout for homelessness. Now in its 13th year, it brings together practices and universities in friendly competition to raise funds to support women and children at risk of homelessness. Since 2011 the event has raised over $400,000 all of which flows to support women in shelters as part of a larger program supporting the combined women's refuge network of Queensland.Second Chance is a volunteer organisation and the success of the charity is built on the hard work of the board who are all actively involved in all aspects of the work we do. We are always open to new members who are keen to help us with our work. It may be as an integral part of the team or help with specific tasks such as graphic design, or assistance at events. In the role of Principal, I helped to develop design strategies and business development. I led urban design projects for a wide range of public and private clients including Economic Development Queensland, Department of Communities and Digital Economy, Treasury for Bris32 Olympics bid, Cross River Rail Development Authority, Logan City Council, Transport and Main Roads, Walker Corp, and Sentinel.My role involved design leadership, client relations, internal and external team management, from project inception through to the end of design development.

Riga, Latvia

Dickson Francis Architects was a small practice based in Riga, Latvia. In the role of director, I assumed responsibility for all aspects of practice operations and design leadership in partnership with co-director Mara Francis.Dickson Francis Architects averaged 5 team members over the period of operation. Projects ranged from high end private residential to large scale rehabilitation and reconstruction of aging soviet industrial infrastructure. Most of our work involved adaptive reuse with our Riga based projects requiring adherence with strict heritage overlays being an 800 year old UNESCO listed city.The practice was involved in all phases of project procurement from sourcing projects, feasibility and due diligence, concept, sketch, and developed design, approvals with authorities, through to contract documentation, tendering, contract management and project management.Our client base were primarily European investors looking for a trusted partner to develop new opportunities in an emerging economy where transparency and inside knowledge was valued .

Limerick, Ireland

Murray O'Laoire Architects was a large Irish practice with offices in Dublin, Limerick, Warsaw, and Moscow. My role was in support of the health team. I was involved with the design development of a new oncology centre for the Mid Western Regional Hospital, assisted with the development of the master plan of the Mid Western Regional Hospital, Limerick, Master Plan, and the design of a new accident and emergency department for Roscommon hospital up to the end of design development and the start of contract documentation.

Devine Erby Mazlin was a medium sized commercial practice with offices in Brisbane and Sydney. My role started as a graduate and ended as project architect. I was the design architect for a new multi use building for the then new UQ Ipswich campus foundation buildings, project architect for the Sommerville House performing arts building up to the start on site, and contributed to the design of new stations for the Airtrain link to the Brisbane international and domestic airport terminals.

Michael Dickson Design Consultant was a sole practice that worked on small mixed use buildings in Brisbane whilst contracting to DEM Group Malaysia on their residential and large scale mixed use projects. The Asian financial crisis saw the contraction of DEM Group and I moved across to work for the parent company Devine Erby Mazlin.

Penang, Malaysia

DEM Group Malaysia was a daughter company of the Australian practice Devine Erby Mazlin. The group worked on projects across the SE Asian region ranging from multi residential, mixed use, and tourist infrastructure. My role was that of lead design for several large scale multi residential projects that were developed to the end of design development before being handed over and developed in partnership with local Malaysian practices.

Riga, Latvia

This short stint of work experience was pivotal downstream as it provided insight and confidence to establish a practice in Riga in 2001. Arhis was a loose collaboration of architects who ran a design focused practice with rigour and integrity. At the time the local architecture profession was emerging from a centralised state system to develop opportunities in an emerging economy. I worked in the practice alongside Mara Francis and we worked on projects from sketch design to design development comprising complex mixed use inner city building and private residential projects.

Donovan Hill Architects became a well established practice in Brisbane, renowned for their place sensitive and well crafted residential, commercial, and institutional buildings. I joined the practice during the foundation stage when there were 4 people in the practice. I was involved in the development and delivery of private residential projects, specifically Hamilton House, Newstead House and assisting on C House, and Teewah House.

Project Services was the state government design practice that at the time was responsible for producing much of the social infrastructure through health, justice, housing, heritage, space planning, and education. Project services employed 4 year out students a year and we each spent 6 months working in one of the divisions. The experience gained at such a pivotal time between my Design Studies and Architecture degree. The experience consolidated learning from my first three years and developed skills that would used in the final two years of full time study. In my time there I spent 6 months with the education team and 6 months with the corrective services team.
