I am a freshwater ecologist with extensive senior management and project management experience, along with specialist freshwater taxonomic skills. I have carried out research and published extensively into impacts of land use, in particular forestry, on stream invertebrate communities. I have an interest in tropical freshwater ecosystems, and have worked in Kenya (upland stream ecology), Mozambique (wetland ecology) and Belize (development of biotic indices). I have a particular interest in creating identification guides that are accessible to a wide range of users. I have co-authored introductory and family-level guides to freshwater invertebrates, and wrote the Defra guide to invasive freshwater shrimps. I recently completed a revised FBA key to freshwater leeches with Malcolm Elliot. I have co-authored several textbooks on aquatic ecology and management. I am a fellow of the Linnean Society of London and a Chartered Ecologist through the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management.
