As a conservation worker, my job duties were to strategically coordinate the placement of debris piles and to thin brush along campsites and roads. The overall goal of my work was to improve the infrastructure of wildfire barriers in critically endangered areas of Philmont Scout Ranch.During my time with Philmont, I had a 6-week transfer to Northern Tier High Adventure Base to work as a canoe guide. As a canoe guide in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, it was my job to provide adults and youth the lifetime experience of trekking through the rugged wetlands of the Canadian/American border. I took groups on one week treks of upwards of 50 miles into the heart of the boundary waters, to areas only accessible by canoe. While on trek, I taught them valuable skills in teamwork, outdoor cooking/cleaning, proper canoeing technique, and perseverance in the face of, at times, overwhelming conditions.
