Main fitting duties consist of layout and assembly of heat exchanger shells, channel boxes and bonnets. Cooler bundles are also constructed. Tacking is done with spray arc and TIG. Additional skillsets utilized are plasma cutting, blueprint reading and layout on cylindrical objects.

Main condensers for Virginia class nuclear powered submarines were constructed of Duplex stainless steel using blue prints and a route card system. Smaller sub-assemblies were constructed using the same system. Fitting duties consist of layout, measurement, proper and accurate usage of a transit, plasma cutting, gauging and weld preparation, and proper bracing to minimize distortion due to welding. Tacking was done per proper welding procedure and parameters in either TIG or Pulse MIG.

Fitting duties consisted of but were not limited to joining steel in multiple positions to form double bottoms as well as ship sides used to construct oil and product tankers. Skills used and learned included print reading, problem solving, measurement, stick welding, flux core welding, air arc gouging, flame washing, cutting, beveling and overall knowledge of parts and orientation of tanker.

Nuclear containment and clean up system project: Fitting of cylindrical, stainless steel sections, up to ¾ inch thick, to each other and to complex curved top and bottom assemblies. Fitting duties also included layout, plasma cutting, and beveling of pipe penetrations through sides of tank, as well as using degree locations and measurements accurate to1/32 inch to find proper placement of pipe extensions based on blueprints. Other duties included blending weld faces and surface finishing. Pressure Vessel Projects: First project consisted of flat, carbon steel plate joined to form a pressure testing chamber for the Navy as well as an external hydro testing tank. Fitting duties included assembly of tank walls and chambers to make inner tank and outer hydro chamber, gas cutting, measurement and layout. Welding duties included welding of all pressure boundaries and structural components using flux core and pulse MIG processes.Second project used five carbon steel cylindrical sections joined end to end to form outer shell of high-pressure gas storage system. Fitting duties included but were not limited to attaching outfitting and reinforcement pieces to outside of shell. Welding duties consisted of MIG tacking and cap welding seems. Final prep of project consisted of sandblasting inside of shell to “white” condition per customer’s specifications.

Skills used and learned include print reading, problem solving, measurement, stick welding, flux core welding and overall knowledge of parts and orientation of oil tanker.Tank testing duties consisted of using pressurized air and specific fittings to test water tight boundaries and bulkheads. Leaks were located, cleaned and repaired in compliance with proper procedure.
