40+ yrs in government, telecoms, brewing, construction, consumer goods, car manufacturing, transport and logistics, spatial and building modelling and simulation, with long term interest in tax, banking and welfare systems. Operated at CEO & Board level and Consulted to Public & Private companies, including 16 yrs with Toyota Australia in Corporate, HR & Manufacturing roles, including at the Port Melbourne Plant, where I led the combined management/union team that closed operations at the site. Phased over 4 yrs, it was acclaimed by the Federal Secretary of the Union as the 'best-managed closure they had experienced'. All operating KPI's were achieved without a single incidence of sabotage, despite over 300 people losing their jobs.As CEO of Westgate Ports, my passion was to create a world-leading Freight Distribution Network servicing Greater Melbourne. Starting from a bare 17 Ha of dirt at Victoria Dock it now operates a fully integrated Transport and Logistics business from wharf to warehouse via road and rail. Using leading-edge IT to eliminate paper from its processes, it achieved better than 98% on-time delivery. With major national and international clients, it was growing at 30% pa. when the business was sold to Qube Logistics in Feb 2012.I then founded VANZI (Virtual Australia & New Zealand Initiative) working with Government and organizations across the Property, Spatial, Building Modelling & IT sectors to create the 3D Digital Built & Legal Environment (DBLE). In 2016, I put together the team (and was lead Author) that wrote the Road Map for 3D Qld. In 2018 I founded a National Workgroup to develop the Governance Framework for the DBLE. See: vanzi.com.auSince the pandemic, I have devoted my time to researching Basic Income proposals from around the world, and writing a 111-page policy document for Basic Income Australia Ltd, a newly registered charity. I am now Chair of the company and actively engaged in discussions across the political spectrum to have a Basic Income implemented in Australia within the next two parliamentary terms.Specialities: Board of Directors, Corporate Strategy, Company Start-up, Toyota Production System, Toyota Management System, Government & Industry Liaison, Change Management, Improving the Value Chain, Systems Design, Union Negotiation, Organization Design, Project Management, Information Management, Financial Management, Digital Built & Legal Environment, and over 40 years Tax, Welfare and Banking systems.

Chief Executive OfficerVanzi Sep 2011 - Present295 Esplanade East, Port Melbourne Vic 3207VANZI is a not for profit established in 2011Its role is to broker development of the Legal Framework, Web Architecture and Business Processes to facilitate the integration of Data from millions of Geographic Information Systems and Building Information Models - to create Virtual Australia and New Zealand (VANZ).This initiative has since been rebranded as 'The Digital Built Environment': a 'true to life' 3D computer model of the natural and built environment (above and below ground, inside and out, including all legal boundaries) on all scales required for decision making - for use in all property related activities:- from concept, through rapid prototyping, planning, design, engineering, construction, facility management and maintenance, to leasing, sale and decommissioning. The model will be used for town planning and property development, infrastructure design and traffic modelling, as well as asset management and service delivery.Amongs many benefits, it will allow cross-government and industry collaboration within the one ‘virtual space’… so all stakeholders can conceive, prototype, test and agree changes to our cities more quickly, with better outcomes at less cost and with less risk than is now possible using traditional ‘stakeholder engagement processes’, involving reports and meetings.Development of the Framework has continued with the inaugural Conference held in Sydney on 13-14 May, 2013. Our second conference was held with the support of buildingSMART and the Spatial Industries Business Association on 15-16 Sept, 2014. This conference is endorsed by key State, Federal and NZ Government Depts. In July 2015 a paper jointly prepared by buildingSMART Australasia and the Spatial Industries Association has gone to the government. In 2016 I put together the team that wrote the Road Map for 3D Qld, and in 2018 established the National DBE Workgroup to protect privacy, enhance security and limit liability in the Virtual World. Advisory Board MemberWestgate Ports Pty Ltd Apr 2010 - Feb 2012Leading the strategic development of Westgate Ports, with particular emphasis on the formation of a Melbourne Intermodal System (combining road and rail) to radically improve the distribution of Port related Freight within Greater Melbourne. It is built around three key landholdings: at Victoria Dock in the Port of Melbourne, at Altona in the West and Lyndhurst in the South East.To date, over $150 million has been invested in the project with strong support from the Victorian Government for an Industry led solution to Port congestion. The project will use 21st. Century 3D simulation tools to design and prove the efficiency and reliability of the whole system first in Virtual Space... to minimise cost and risk, just as the car companies now do for their factories and new models. The result will be a world class freight distribution system that improves efficiency, reliability and safety… while lowering cost, congestion and pollution.

VariousToyota Motor Corporation Australia Dec 1990 - Dec 2006After completing a consulting assignment reviewing their Adminstration division, I joined Toyota as National Administration Manager and Assistant Company Secretary. It seemed at the time I could learn more from Toyota than I could teach! I later moved to HR where I undertook several senior roles aimed at improving HR systems and operations and then leadership development. The key challenge was 'Change Management' requiring extensive collaboration with the Manufacturing division to integrate Toyota's Japanese philosophies and work practices into a mixed culture of 83 nationalities and Australian management styles . This led to an opportunity to move into manufacturing at Toyota's Port Melbourne Plant... to utilise the approaches I had been promoting from the sidelines! The plant produced seats, bumper bars, door trims and small press parts and employed around 600 team members. It was the major supplier of parts to the main assembly plant in Altona. However the facility was very old. In 2002, Toyota took the decision to cease operations at the site. I led the team that successfully closed the plant without any sabotage... while achieving all operating KPI's. My time at Toyota has indeed proved invaluable providing deep understanding of the Toyota Production and Management Systems -
PrincipalNostrum Consulting Sep 1984 - Nov 1990Operated my own consulting practice in financial and capital management across a wide range of large and mid-sized organizations, including several assignments for WR Grace (at the time, one of the largest private companies in the world with interests in Australia involving polymer films, chemical additives and thermo-formed plastics). The work involved the evaluation of a number of large scale capital works projects to establish a business case.

Group Company Secretary And Then Group General ManagerKemtron Limited Oct 1980 - Sep 1984This was a major public company at the time with over 3,000 employees with three distinct arms: Manufacturing via it's Mistral Fans and Kempthorne Lighting divisions; Construction via CDF Hooker Builders and Prentice Constructions; and Electrical Wholesale via Lawrence and Hanson.I joined originally as Group Company Secretary but was subsequently appointed as Group General Manager when the company suffered a series of severe losses through its construction arm. Over a period of 18 months I led the re-organization of the business resulting in the repayment of all debt, a substantial cash balance and a sound manufacturing business in a combined Mistral/Kempthorne entity. Unfortunately, the cash became the target of an offshore 'corporate raider'. I left after the new management took control. Subsequently, the cash was stripped from the company forcing it into liquidation several years later.
