Twitter - @michaelgheadI am a global health researcher based within the Clinical Informatics Research Unit (CIRU), at University of Southampton, UK. My research is around infectious disease public health and epidemiology. This includes ongoing COVID-19 research, as well as Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) such as scabies and onchocerciasis. My global collaborations are particularly strong with colleagues in Ghana and Togo, in West Africa. I have been commenting extensively on the coronavirus COVID19 outbreak in the UK and international media. This has included TV interviews with the BBC, CNN and also interviews with media in Ghana, South Africa, Canada, Singapore and across Europe. I lead on the Research Investments in Global Health (ResIn) study. This project has previously received funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Royal Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and the University of Southampton .This has analysed approx 100k awards covering $105 billion of global infectious disease research investment (now published in Lancet Global Health, with numerous previous published papers and reports). We are describing the spend on each infectious disease, the type of science, the geography of the project focus, and how the investments compare to global and national burdens of disease. We are also engaged in research-to-policy translation and increasing the uptake of research knowledge into policy and practice.I also have ongoing projects in scabies and onchocerciasis research , health systems, vaccines and anti-vaccine activism, and am a UK STEM Ambassador. I have a wealth of contacts within numerous high level global health stakeholders, including for example the World Health Organisation, European Commission and many research funders, academics and advocates.
