About Michael Campbell

Born and raised in Glasgow, i'm passionate about everything I do and highly motivated. 'People Make Glasgow' is our slogan and it's so very true, and in any business, its people are its biggest asset. Engaging with individuals and teams is the part of any health safety and wellbeing role i value and love most. Learning not just about the tasks they conduct but about the person is key to getting the best from them. I have amassed thirty years ports experience from trainee to crane operator and instructor before embarking on my management career with ten years as Operations Manager at Europe's fastest discharge port (at the time). We supplied the UK's energy industry with coal imported from all over the world to keep the country moving. It was a role I thoroughly enjoyed and put my heart and soul into before a tragic incident in 2013 changed my perspective on life. Following completion of my NEBOSH Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, I knew immediately it was a career I wanted to pursue and one that could make a change to the lives and working conditions of our people. I have been lucky enough to be doing just that since 2015. Thanks to Peel Ports and my group role, I met and supported teams all over the UK and Ireland and was mentored by THE most inspirational health and safety individual, Ron Hunter who was the EHS Director for the group.Briefly, some responsibilities, knowledge and experience:- Developing and managing a successful behavioural safety programme across the group- Developing, managing and delivering short and long-term strategies for continual improvement- Creation and implementation of policies & procedures- Crisis management under intense pressures as a result of adverse incidents- EHS training at all levels of the business- Strong builder of positive& authentic relationships with all stakeholders- Creation and maintenance of EHS managements systems- Extensive audit and investigation experience- Designated Duty Holder for Fire, Asbestos and WAH- Experience of EHS Governance across multiple sites Thirty years is a long time in any business these days, an experience I loved and I am very grateful for. Deciding to move was like leaving my family behind. It was a difficult decision, however it was the right time to pursue another challenge and i'm delighted and excited to say my new chapter has begun with Balfour Beatty in their Power Transmission and Distribution team. It's a fantastic opportunity in a great company with amazing people delivering unbelievable projects and legacies. Watch this space 🤩

Listed skills include Process Scheduler, Iosh Managing Safely, Kpi Dashboards, Pfso, and 45 others.

Health And Safety Manager

Hunterston Terminal

Utilising 24 years working in the ports industry in a variety of roles and handling all types of cargo to pursue a career which I am extremely passionate about... Health And Safety.Indeed it is a Marmite topic which has most of us rolling our eyes at the very mention and the rest engrossed. I well and truly was hooked when I sat my NEBOSH certificate and new right away that this was the path I wanted to follow. I knew I could take all my experience working on the front line and in a management role and make a real difference to protecting both the workforce and the company by ensuring compliance. - Engaging the workforce in contributing to the direction we are heading- Designing and delivering vital health and safety training to the workforce- Establishing a Safety Committee to give all a voice- Implementing a host of new initiatives such as - Behavioural Safety Program - Hazard Observation Reporting System - Improved means of communication - Focusing on the 'Health' in Health & Safety i.e. noise, dust, hand-arm vibration etc... - Improved reporting for managers and directors to show trends and weaknesses - Implementation of Golden RulesWithout doubt my focus is in creating a positive safety culture where all employees think of Health and Safety before they start any task and feel empowered to make important decisions to ensure corners are not cut.

Operations Manager

Hunterston Terminal

On returning to Clydeport, now part of the Peel Ports Group, I began my management career at The port of KGV. KGV is a bulk port handling animal feeds, steel products, grains, aggregate and building supplies such as timber, plywood and gyproc as well as various project cargoes. In 2005 I progressed to the port of Hunterson which handles coal for major energy producers throughout the UK. Hunterston imports 6million tonnes+ per annum handling the largest vessels built. The terminal is one of the UK's largest deep water ports with discharge rates of upto 60,000t per day using two ships unloaders. We store and deliver this cargo by rail and sea operating on a 24/7 basis. My role oversees the utilisation and management of the 95 full time employees and terminal resources. Over and above this my duties involve:- Working closely with the General Manager and Port Director to meet key targets and KPI's- Maintaining a customer focussed approach ensuring that we meet all our customers’ requirements- Developing relationships with local and government authorities such as SEPA, Department for Transport, MCA, UK Border Force, Local Councils and Environmental Health, Small Ports Police and local police forces as well as local community forums.- Maintaining and developing a strong and positive health and safety culture- Developing a strong and positive environmental awareness culture - Having an excellent knowledge of customer contracts to ensure we excel in our obligations- Ensure maximum flexibility in my teams to keep them motivated and flexible- Working closely with our maintenance department to schedule planned maintenance projects

Jun 2004 - Mar 2015

Cargo Inspector

Bsi Inspectorate

United Kingdom

As a cargo inspector I represented various global customers. I was Responsible for the phytosanitary analysis, condition and the overseeing material handling methods of various cargoes imported and exported within UK ports. I covered most minor and major ports from Immingham, Ipswich, Birkenhead, Port of Tyne, King George V Dock Glasgow, Leith, Montrose, Invergordon amongst others. Cargoes included wheat, barley, animal feeds, ammonium nitrates etc...In this year I gained a lot of experience of both good and bad working practices of many ports.

Jun 2003 - Jun 2004

Port Operator

Clydeport Operations Ltd

King George V Dock & Meadowside Granary, Glasgow

I started on a Youth Training Scheme for two years at Meadowside Granary in Glasgow's West End at the age of 17 earning a grand old sum of ÂŁ29.50 per week. My duties involved anything from general admin and operating the weigh bridge to start with and then onto testing wheat and barley destined for flour mills and distilleries for insects and general condition. When Meadowside closed down I was based at KGV Glasgow starting in the office and weigh bridge. Once old enough I moved onto plant and machinery operating loading shovels, FLT's then moving onto overhead and mobile cranes in time becoming an instructor on these machines. With a heavy heart I chose to try my hand at something else and moved onto BSi but remained within the port industry and at times KGV itself in my new role.
