I have 24 years of international professional experience as a forester and a business administrator and have held several managerial positions during my career. I have worked 6½ years as manager in the private forestry sector in Indonesia and Malaysia with timber trading, and 13 years as Chief Technical Advisor / Project Director to donor funded forestry projects in South East Asia and Southern Africa. I have throughout my career held positions of increasing responsibility and have extensive experience with all aspects of sustainable forest management, project management and business administration.     Day-to-day management as Team Leader on the EU funded “EC-Indonesia Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Support Project” whose main objective was to support and encourage the Government of Indonesia (GoI), the private sector and civil society to create appropriate enabling conditions conducive to reducing trade in illegal timber and other non-sustainable practices in the forestry sector. This was a large project with a duration of 5 years and a total budget of Euro 16,746,000. 4 main results were achieved by the project: (1) Improved forest law and its enforcement; (2) Forest sector governance improved through enhanced accountability and transparency; (3) Illegal trade in forest products reduced, and legal trade promoted; (4) Coordination of FLEGT activities and liaison among donors, other international organizations and GoI in place. The project was implemented in close collaboration with Government Institutions at central, provincial and local level including customs, police, prosecutors, judges, security and intelligence institutions, trade and industry associations, communities, local and international NGOs and research institutions etc.

    Day-to-day management as European Co-Director on the EU funded "Illegal Logging Response Centre" (ILRC) project, whose main objective was to establish an ILRC within the Ministry of Forestry in Jakarta, Indonesia. The project had a duration of 3 years. The objective of the ILRC was to assure the conservation and sustainable management of the forest resources of Indonesia. The project was targeting a basic requirement for sustainability of the forest resource: the need to protect the remaining forests from the rampant illegal logging which had been going on and increased in intensity and geographic spread over recent years. The specific objective of the project was to strengthen the capacity of the Government of Indonesia to reduce the level of illegal logging within the forest estate, with particular emphasis on the illegal logging taking place within national parks and protected forest estates. The project succesfully assited the Government of Indoneisa in reducing the incidences of illegal logginng in a number of National Parks

The main results from the project were an updated forest policy, forest legislation and a national forestry action programme.The project was implemented in close collaboration with local government and other major stakeholders like rural communities, focus groups, NGOs and the private forestry sector. The main project strategy was though a participatory policy formulation process to enhance the understanding and acceptance of the need for sustainable management of the natural resources in Swaziland.

    Day-to-day management as Chief Technical Advisor on the project “Study on Extraction and Processing of Forest Residues and Small Dimension Logs”, whose main objective was to study and recommend on improved forest extraction and processing methods in order to improve sustainability and reduce environmental impacts on a natural forest environment. The project was implemented in close collaboration with local government staff and the private sector (logging operators and processing plant managers). The project identified critical aspects of both extraction and processing methods and technology, and developed and implemented demonstrations of feasible solutions. Workshops and seminars were conducted as a means of transferring skills to project counterparts and disseminate results to the involved institutions. The transfer of new technologies was documented, and policy papers and procedural guidelines developed jointly with national counterparts.
