Dr. Shuler is the Eckert Professor of Engineering ( Emeritus) at Cornell University and President of Hesperos. He is recognized for his pioneering work establishing modern biochemical engineering over the last 48 years. He has contributed to the development of bioprocesses to produce useful drugs and chemicals using living cells. In particular, he was instrumental in establishing a plant cell culture process to make Taxol, an important anti cancer drug, in a commercial process developed by Phyton. Further his work on cell models was foundational to the development of metabolic engineering and is an early example of systems biology. He has worked for over 30 years on constructing and using multi organ systems to predict the response of the body to drugs or environmental chemicals. He was the first to describe and patent a "Body-on-a- Chip" ( Sin,et al, 2001, Proc. SPIE 4560 and US patent 7,288,405). He has made numerous technological improvements to the basic concept (e.g. pumpless system; US Patent 8,748,180 B2, and with unidirectional flow; US pat 2020/0070165 A1 )) that have made these systems more practical for adoption in pharmacological research and form the intellectual framework for Hesperos’ services. In addition to his role as CEO and President with Hesperos he has served on the Scientific Advisory Boards for Verax and HuRel as well as many Universities and Foundations. He served on the Board of Directors for Phyton and is currently a member of the Board of Directors for Hesperos.Dr. Shuler graduated with a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota (1973) and a B.S. from the University of Notre Dame (1969). He has received numerous research related awards, among his honors is election to the National Academy of Engineering (1989) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1996) as well as an honorary PhD from the University of Notre Dame (2009). He has published over 345 peer reviewed journal articles of which over 100 focus on in vitro toxicology and pharmacology (Body-on-a-Chip). Dr. Shuler is the sole or co-inventor on multiple pending and issued U.S. and international patents.
