Michael Linke, PhD is an Adjunct Professor of Internal Medicine at the UC College of Medicine, the chair the StrokeNet Central IRB, and the SMART IRB Program Director for Education. He retired as a Health Science Officer from the Cincinnati VA Medical Center (VAMC) after over 30 years of service in 2018 where he studied Pneumocystis pneumonia. His early work focused on characterization of a family of variable surface antigens of Pneumocystis and later on the innate host immune response to Pneumocystis. Mike served as chair of the UC IRB from 2004-2024. Mike currently serves as the chair of the StrokeNet Central IRB. The NIH created StrokeNet to conduct clinical trials to advance acute stroke treatment, stroke prevention, and recovery. The StrokeNet Central IRB oversees 10 StrokeNet studies at over 900 research sites. He also continues to serve as the SMART IRB Program Director for Education and coordinates the education component of the SMART IRB platform. The Streamlined, Multisite, Accelerated Resources for Trials IRB Reliance (SMART IRB). Is a platform supported by the NIH to streamline the IRB review process for multi-site studies conducted across different institutions.
