I established Network Management Consultants Ltd (NMC) as a registered company in New Zealand to enable me to have the freedom to work as an Independent Contractor in the IT sector. I work a variety of projects with organisations in New Zealand and Australia, typically involving major change such as merging, consolidating or even de-merging IT environments to meet business drivers, but also as part of projects to update technology and utilise new services such as Cloud services.My role is usually as Solution or Enterprise Architect in a project focused on defined deliverables within a time period and budget. This usually involves working with in-house technology teams and vendors to deliver the solution and ensure that it can be transitioned to BAU for ongoing support.

AHPRA are the registration agency for the Health sector in Australia. This engagement is a combination of on-site and remote work with the AHPRA team on some interesting infrastructure projects including carrying out a Security Risk Assessment and advising on infrastructure changes to improve resilience and service delivery.

This engagement was under the Controls Remediation Program, focused on the uplifting the existing Privilege Access Management (PAM) solution and defining security controls across production systems. Following this initial work, the focus shifted to working with the Risk team to identify solutions to capture and manage security events into management systems.

My role was Solution Architect for the programme of work to relocate the IT infrastructure and services from the current locations around Auckland into the new Head Office in Victoria St. This includes consolidation of the current Radio/Broadcast, Publishing and online environments into a single IT infrastructure platform in a new custom built data centre of 58 racks. The move into the new building was completed successfully and all systems were migrated to the new platforms with minimal disruption. Following on from this, my focus shifted to architecture planning around disaster recovery, backup and security.

Architect responsible for network, security and management systems for Gen-i, primarily working in Cloud and security services space. I am heavily involved in developing cloud services in Gen-i. As part of the Telecom group, Gen-i is significantly expanding cloud offerings for customers across Australasia. We have been delivering “network delivered services” for many years, but didn’t call it “cloud”. I am involved in projects to expand our IAAS services and scale, with focus on enhanced management, orchestration, self-service and reporting. The main challenges are delivering high value shared Private Cloud (i.e. private cloud solutions on a shared platform) services with online self-service and reporting capabilities, while maintaining security and proving it through compliance. Needless to say, this is an emerging space, working with leading vendors such as Cisco, EMC (inc Ionix & RSA), VMware, InfoVista and Watch4Net, it is clear that the work we are doing here in NZ is leading edge and in most cases requires us to work with vendor experts from the US. Areas of focus also include orchestration and run-book automation to enable standardised product delivery and operational efficiencies. In addition to this, my other key area of focus is management and security systems, specifically how to enable a complex set of management services from common platforms to deliver management ranging from a single router to managing the ICT environments for NZs largest organisations. Other functions include being lead architect across the Safecom Service suite. These services provide many NZ customers with security services such as Mail Filtering (Spam, viruses, policy enforcement etc), Internet Browsing (blocking malware and enforcing business policy), VPNs and extranet functions. All in all - never boring!

Specialising in design and delivery of network management systems and security infrastructure systems. Projects include architecture and detailed design of Service Delivery Platform systems for Telecom NZ, AAPT Australia, CBA (Commonweath Bank of Australia) and EMS-Global/BT Ignite.

Anite provided network solutions, consulting and services to NZ customers. I had worked extensively with Anite in my previous role at Cabletron. My role at Anite was to provide consultancy services to Anite customers around network management systems including the design and implementation of systems including Spectrum, HP Openview, Cisco Works, Tivoli and BMC Patrol.

Cabletron was a major vendor in LAN infrastructure and management systems, including products such as Spectrum (now owned by CA). As the sole representative for Cabletron in New Zealand, I provided a wide range of skills to customers and resellers including training, consulting, design and support.My area of focus was in the management systems, at the time Spectrum was easily the best NMS on the market, and I was able to design, implement and deliver management systems solutions for NZ companies such as Telecom NZ, Dept. of Social Welfare, Logical Networks, ASB Bank, CS First Boston, Auckland College of Education and many others.

This role involved designing network solutions for New Zealand Corporates and Unisys global customers with operations in NZ. My role was primarily to work with the customer to understand their requirements, identify vendor solutions and design end-to-end network solutions to meet them. This was in the early days of distributed networking and included design and deployment of large network solutions using 3Com, Cisco and Bay Networks product.

I was responsible for pre-sales support for a number of software products including Microsoft LAN Manager, Microsoft OS/2 (yep there was such a thing although most folk at Redmond would like to forget it...), DCA Comms Server (SNA Gateway), Protools, and CA-Unicentre.
