Designing, Developing and Flying Remotely Piloted Aerial SystemsStarted out with Fixed wing conventional RPAS providing leading edge designs and capabilities.Rapid transition made to Multi-rotors as the technology became affordable to industry (some time prior to the emergence of consumer drone technology), enabling a much more diverse range of outputs for various clients and became the go-to people for jobs that others said either couldn't be done or the engineering would take months (we'd generally deliver in days). Several projects involving modifying sensor packages that were never designed to be flown to enable both accurate data gathering as well as designing suitable control systemsNon-Aerial projects where also a frequent challenge, providing innovative ground based remote inspection systems with results reducing client downtime, providing higher quality data, lowering personnel exposure to hazardous situations and generally at a fraction of the cost of conventional techniques.Focusing on continual development to reduce maintenance requirements and increase both in-field serviceability and ease of use of supplied systems.

Development and management of virtual simulation software packages.Development and delivery of virtual simulation software scenarios. Development and delivery of virtual simulation software training (Train the Trainer)Liaising with SME's (Subject Matter Experts) on integrating virtual simulation into established Army training packages and being a champion for change in that process

Repair and maintenance of various Army equipment such as Secure Radios, Weapon sights, Night Vision and Targeting Systems. Providing backup capability for various simulation tasks as LMGI NZ move into that area. Also providing support back to Army Simulation in an IT capacity.Working with client to better understand needs and provide a more efficient system for maintenance and repair (eventually reduced the requirement for 3 full time technicians down to 2 due to better use of manpower)

Provided electrical and engineering support to a local UAS company as they began working on integrating various systems into a Survey capable UAS. Also provided advice and direction on IT pathways.

Made the switch from Airforce to Army to take up a fixed term contract to deliver support to the NZ Army Simulation Centre. Worked on reducing downtime and enabling faster reaction to customer requests in particular speeding up the change management process. Wide scope of responsibilities from basic day to day customer support to engaging with allied nations for co-operative exercises and experimentation with what Simulation could deliver to Allied ForcesDelivered IT Infrastructure Design and Support for several multi-nation exercises (NZ, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and UK)Delivered Simulation support to first NZ Army Ranger course on short notice (roughly 72 hours from notice to delivery)Expanded from a single site with approx 50 PC's to 3 sites with around 200 PC's being maintained

Fun and challenging time down in Wellington. Working with everything from legacy serial comms through to high speed datalinks. Massive learning curve which I enjoyed immensely, attended CCNA course in about the 3rd week I was there learnt all about Cisco gear then was handed a Nortel switch to setup when I got back to work...funny guys. A lot of time on call and travelling around the country doing fault remediation. Also involved with the move from the old Defence building in Stout St to the new locations in Wellington and Upper Hutt, some rather 'unique' logistical challenges were overcome in that one. Promoted to Sergeant during my time here and enjoyed the added responsibility and ability to start to effect change that came with the rank.Initial staff at the unit was 6 personnel, due to lack of manning available from the services this was eventually reduced down to 1 with a similar workload still being undertaken. Continual development to achieve this focused on remote access technology and up-skilling of non-tech staff in the areas of responsibility to enable minor remediation of faults on-site.

Ohakea

After some time in the civilian workforce decided to re-enlist and ended up initially in Auckland at the Transmitters Section working on 1-10kW Transmitters and their associated equipment. Was then offered a position in Ohakea which I took up and spent 8 months running the Ohakea Battery Bay (servicing of aircraft lead-acid and alkali batteries) before I moved on to run the Radio Navigation Bay for around a year or so. Radio Nav was an interesting time as the mechanic and technician in the bay working for me both had degrees and ensured that I was kept on my toes

Amberley, Queensland, Australia

Worked at 38 Sqn on the Caribou aircraft, returned early to NZ for personal reasons. Enjoyed immensely the different culture and experience that my time in the RAAF Uniform gave me.

Ohakea

Avionics Technician. Worked mainly on the Strike Aircraft (A4K Skyhawk). Participated in various overseas exercises throughout the Asia Pacific region in total attending 6 Vanguard Exercises (Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand) and numerous deployments to Australia. Between stints on the Squadron spent time in bay level servicing (Instruments and Weapons). Promoted to Corporal 18 months after completing my senior course which was a fairly quick transition at the time. On the disbandment of the combat force was offered a position in the RAAF and decided to make the move to Australia and see what it had to offer.
