Mike ran all aspects of these projects including the following:- Early phase construction planning and program development- Procurement of all subcontract packages- Management of a direct works team and all subcontractors from early works, footings, superstructure, cladding, service installation, ceilings and partitions and fitout. - Management of time and budget including monthly progress reporting and forecasting- Resolution of design issues in tandem with the Alliance team of architects and design engineers

Working as a project manager with a specialist subcontractor supplying glass-reinforced concrete (GRC) components for a variety of applications including facades, planters, ceilings and other architectural features, Mike's role encompassed:-Contract administration including preparation and processing of quotations and RFQs, progress and variation claims;-Coordination of design work between an off-shore design team and local stakeholders including consultants, architects, main contractors and interfacing trades;-Management of program and budget;-Management of logistics involved with import of materials.

Working on The Residences at Marina Gate II, a design & build project for a 64 story, luxury residential tower. Responsible for the delivery of 508 apartments in a role that involved development of project strategy, interfacing with client to resolve design issues, setting work schedules and facilitating constraint resolution workshops.

I worked on The Wharf Retail Development on Bluewaters Island, responsible for the delivery of the 2nd basement level which included 60 000 sq.m. of parking, 2 cooling plant rooms and 12 service/loading bays. I managed the four subcontract packages. I oversaw works to protect a 450m stretch of road from tidal action by placement of geobags.

I worked on the apron works package for Concourse D at Dubai International Airport where we installed key infrastructure of the building and aircraft stands. As a site engineer on the enabling works team my role involved interfacing with Airport and Police authorities for work approvals, planning and executing diversions to air-side roads and land-side/air-side fences. I also lead the resolution of design coordination issues for delivery of the aircraft stands.

The SAICE Student Chapter aimed to:1. Act as a link connecting the various role players in the South African civil engineering industry and the students of civil engineering at the University of Cape Town; 2. Promote a greater interest, among the students, in the civil engineering profession beyond the academic program.3. Facilitate the relationship building between all members of the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Cape Town To this end we organised events including the cocktail evening attended by students and industry role-players, a field trip to the Berg River Dam and a football tournament for members of the UCT Civil Engineering Department.

• Areas of specialisation: Concrete materials science and structural engineering.• Research topic: The influence of aggregate particle size distribution on concrete penetrability.The coursework component of my Masters was weighted a third and included modules on structural dynamics and finite element methods and research component. My research, which counted two thirds, concluded that whilst aggregate makes up a significant proportion of the bulk of concrete, its grading has little direct impact on concrete penetrability in the realms of grading profiles of aggregates typically available in the South African market. In applications and environments requiring the highest concrete durability, they key consideration is selection of aggregate grading for best workability to achieve thorough compaction.

Paarl

Whilst studying I worked a stint as assistant resident engineer on a road rehabilitation project on the R101 and R301 roads in the region around Paarl in South Africa. The work included the construction of new base layers and surface of one section and patch repairs on sections where existing damage was less extensive. In this role I was primarily responsible for carrying out quality assurance procedures. I also had exposure to work scheduling and road construction techniques.

During this period I was based at UWP Consulting's Bryanston office, where my primary role was to assist with the compilation of the bill of quantities for the contract documents for the Bakwena N1N4 road construction project.

At what was formerly known as Walter's and Simpson, I gained my first work formal work experience, however in the field of quantity surveying rather than civil engineering. It was here, whilst I was compiling progress valuations the release of payments for work completed, that I confirmed my desire to work in the construction industry. However, here a also realised that quantity surveying was not my calling, thus precipitating my move towards civil engineering.
