I thrive on finding solutions to a wide variety of problems, big or small. I love to push myself to learn and grow as a student by absorbing new information and practicing through application. To me, problem solving has always been like second nature. I think back to when I was just six years old playing wiffle ball in the front yard with my brother. We constantly disputed what counted as a ball or a strike so I came up with a simple, yet effective solution. I found a stick and a cardboard box and created a strike zone. Something so unadorned solved hours of bickering between the two of us, and we were both pleased.Starting last year, my sophomore year, I got the opportunity to lead an academic committee of six other members for my fraternity. As head of this committee I would conduct meetings with my counterparts to come up with ways to consult with struggling freshmen and other members in my fraternity. Additionally, I along with the committee would spend four hours per week hosting study tables where members could get work done and ask for help in areas that they struggled. I found that the largest problem amongst struggling students was ineffective study tactics that were not personalized to their way of thinking. I would consult one on one with these students and help them create outlines that helped them study more proficiently, focussing on areas where they were weaker. The committee and I saw great results amongst struggling students and saw a boost of up to a full point GPA increase in some cases.I work efficiently independently, but find that I work best in a team of motivated individuals where a free flow of ideas is encouraged. Whether I am in a leadership position or just an active member of the team, my passion for collaboration and drive for excellence help me to succeed in all areas in life. Whether this is for the betterment of myself, others, or a common goal amid a group, I thrive in an environment where diverse perspectives are valued.
