My main roles as Publishing Director at F1000 centred around developing, managing and leading F1000's publishing portfolio, community outreach, and editorial teams. My major tasks were overseeing the development and performance of F1000's publishing platforms; portfolio and editorial strategy; open data innovation projects; global content commissioning; community outreach plans; budget and resource management and being responsible for open access revenue. I worked in close collaboration with our with Managing Director, Chief Technology Officer, and Director of Strategic Partnerships on developing future strategies and innovations for open research publishing. I led and line managed a diverse team of Editorial staff, Publishers, Editorial Community Managers and Head of Data and Software Publishing with a track record of high staff satisfaction and retention. I successfully built and managed a team of 20 people through individual staff development, team motivation, cross-departmental collaboration and knowledge sharing and training. I was responsible for F1000's high level relationships with flagship publishing partners including the European Commission, Wellcome, NIHR, Science Foundation Africa and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Through my role as Publishing Director, I gained extensive experience in understanding global publishing trends and open science policies and developing new partners and researcher communities across The Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.
