Traumatic muscle injuries can be debilitating and as we age healing these injuries becomes even more challenging. Often in young and older individuals these injuries heal slowly and improperly with resultant loss of function. Regenerative medicine technologies, using stem cells, provide a way to restore muscle and improve its function. One approach to muscle repair is the deveopment of stem cell delivery devices which guide the stem cells towards a skeletal muscle phenotype via environmental cues. We are devising technologies to deliver autologous adult stem cells and direct their differentiation towards myoblasts using decellularized muscle matrices. In addition, understanding the biology of extracellular matrix synthesis in response to injury and age is critical while developing cell-based therapies.
