3-month contract to convert an ad-hoc build environment for an embedded Linux system to work with GNU tools in the Timsys Factory build framework. Required in-depth knowledge of open source tools, embedded systems, and the Linux build environment in order to unravel the legacy build system.

Provided general Linux expertise to a team building a DVR based on a Broadcom chip with a MIPS core. Responsible for making changes to the flash file system (JFFS2). Identified and corrected a problem causing data corruption on return from power failure. Devised a test to reliably duplicate the problem. Responsible for adding support for a new flash chip. Back-ported JFFS2 file system and MTD driver patches from a newer kernel version to provide support for a new flash chip. Wrote tests that identified a problem with the chip's firmware and worked with the manufacturer to correct it. Performed extensive work on the build system to provide unique kernel packaging required for the product. Made modifications to the bootloader (CFE) and kernel startup scripts to support a failsafe upgrade environment. Set up and used kernel profiling to debug performance problems in a proprietary file system. Identified a design problem with the file system and wrote a proposal to correct the problem. Worked on product stability problems, such as recovery from power failures and memory leaks.

Worked on a virtual Linux file system used in an embedded system to communicate with a custom Windows driver. Work included making the file system run on either 32 or 64-bit Linux systems communicating with 32 or 64-bit Windows systems. Work included debugging Linux and Windows drivers.Designed and implemented a Linux development environment source control system based on Subversion and Apache. Took all existing custom drivers and code and integrated them into a Linux build environment. Built a cross-compile environment to build an embedded system. Put together and taught a 2.6 Linux kernel internals class for other engineers in the company.

Evaluated Wind River's version of carrier-grade Linux to conform to the POSIX PSE54 standard. Configured and ran Open Group's VSX and VSC test suites. Analyzed, debugged, and wrote corrective code for the kernel and utilities. Tested and debugged NPTL thread interfaces against the Posix standard.

Responsible for the kernel engineering support for Tru64 UNIX enterprise customers. Managed a large group of senior level kernel, VM, and I/O engineers responsible for analyzing crash dumps, diagnosing problems, and providing patches. Oversaw resolution of mission critical problems in a fast paced environment and often brought together a team of functional managers as a project team when problems crossed disciplines. Coordinated customer support with country and regional support centers. Championed product quality as voting member of Tru64 UNIX development/ release management team. Introduced a new process to speed the inclusion of patches in product releases that greatly reduced number of critical problems received from customers. Managed a project for the development, testing, and patch delivery for all critical security vulnerabilities of Tru64 UNIX. Took control of the stalled project and eliminated large backlog of work and put project back on schedule in 3 months. Reduced time-to-solve critical problems from average of 30 to 17 days by taking an active role in bringing individual problems to resolution.

Ported IBM's Mach micro-kernel to Alpha single-handedly in 4 months. Wrote VM physical layer and kernel start-up code. Analyzed Digital's UNIX real-time capabilities. Wrote software to identify long latencies in the kernel. Resulted in lower latency and more predictable real-time events. Identified a missing real-time preemption on return in assembly language code Spent 1 year on-site in France as a UNIX consultant at a telecom customer. Wrote extension to the kernel for real-time inter-process communication that met customer's performance and system integrity criteria. Worked on resolving Advfs file system bugs and many minor enhancements. Designed and implemented a file system enhancement to dynamically add disk space to HP's Advfs journaling file system.

Worked on the initial software development for Concurrent's NUMA architecture system. Designed and implemented the RS-232 serial driver and console routines. Modified the task scheduler to implement real-time range of priorities resulting in more predictable task scheduling. Wrote Concurrent's implementation of POSIX 1.b message passing.

Designed and wrote real-time communications software used to connect up to 10,000 lottery terminals for the California and other state lotteries. Configured the computer systems and storage necessary for each lottery installation. Traveled worldwide supporting lottery customers as a consultant on system architecture.
