I’m a former editor at The New York Times, having left the paper in November, 2016, after a 14-year career there, and was most recently on the politics desk during the 2016 presidential primaries and general election. I now teach Writing and Reporting, and Media Ethics at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's prestigious School of Media and Journalism. At The Times, I led teams of reporters, assigned stories responding to big breaking news, and managed complex projects on tight deadlines. I was also the corrections editor for the politics desk, investigating complaints of error, determining whether corrections were warranted, and crafting the language when they were. In 2014 I led The Times’s annual Neediest Cases campaign, a high-profile project covering poverty in New York City. I chose the story subjects from the hundreds of proposals submitted by city aid agencies, oversaw a large team of reporters, edited each of the nearly 100 articles, and managed the project’s budget. Was the business editor and managing editor of Durham Magazine from Jan. 2019 to Feb. 2020.
