Michael began his career in the field of criminal justice in 1989 as a probation officer with the Georgia Department of Corrections. Prior to being named Commissioner of DCS, he served as the Executive Director of the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles since 2010. Michael has also held several key senior and executive leadership roles in the Georgia Department of Corrections to include Director of Probation Training, Director of Probation, and Corrections Division Director where he was responsible for prison operations, probation operations and special operations. A few noteworthy accomplishments under Michael's leadership include the startup of Georgia's first day reporting center, implementation of a sanctioning matrix for probation, the Probation Options Management Act, streamlining of the prison diagnostic system, use of voice recognition systems in community supervision, implementation of a virtual office concept for community supervision, video conferencing for preliminary and final hearings, and creation of the Max-Out Re-Entry Program. Michael holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. He is also a graduate of the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College. He is a member of several state and national professional organizations and a recipient of the Lee Broome Memorial Award for Excellence. He previously chaired the County/ Municipal Probation Advisory Council and served on the Commission on Family Violence. He currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council and is chairman of the Probable Cause Committee. In 2013, Michael was named to the three year Executive Session on Community Supervision at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Additionally, he is currently part of the Council of State Governments/American Probation Parole Association Statewide Recidivism Reduction Focus Group.
