Research Engineer (Mitacs Accelerate Program)
Trojan Technologies Inc. is an international high technology environmental company. The Company specializes in the application of ultraviolet light for disinfecting drinking water as well as other industrial and residential uses. Trojan supplies ultraviolet municipal wastewater disinfection systems throughout the world. • Researched the application of ultra-violet LEDs, lamps, and light filters for the treatment of wastewater and drinking water for the aquaculture, food & beverage industries, etc.• Developed the testing protocol to study the long term effects of intense UV light on band-pass filters for disinfection over an 8 month period, measured absorbance of filters at planned time intervals, and identified the deterioration rate of the transmission profile and proposed a pre-exposure treatment prior to installation by company technicians.• Investigated the efficiency of different light-transmitting materials in order to reduce the energy lost during disinfection, demonstrated the improved proficiency of the tested materials and initiated the recommendation to build prototypes for dental applications. Results were presented at the 2014 IUVA conference by the team leader.• Trained the team leader, near the end of the internship, with SOPs created for two main projects; the instructions would serve as guidance for future team members.• Facilitated communication by keeping a daily progress journal, daily minor meetings and weekly major meetings with the team leader, and punctual with initial training sessions received from colleagues.
