The Company specializes in the application of ultraviolet light for disinfecting drinking water as well as other industrial and residential uses. Trojan supplies ultraviolet municipal wastewater disinfection systems throughout the world. • Researched the application of ultra-violet LEDs, lamps, and light filters for the treatment of wastewater and drinking water for the aquaculture, food & beverage industries, etc.• Developed the testing protocol to study the long term effects of intense UV light on band-pass filters for disinfection over an 8 month period, measured absorbance of filters at planned time intervals, and identified the deterioration rate of the transmission profile and proposed a pre-exposure treatment prior to installation by company technicians.• Investigated the efficiency of different light-transmitting materials in order to reduce the energy lost during disinfection, demonstrated the improved proficiency of the tested materials and initiated the recommendation to build prototypes for dental applications. Results were presented at the 2014 IUVA conference by the team leader.• Trained the team leader, near the end of the internship, with SOPs created for two main projects; the instructions would serve as guidance for future team members.• Facilitated communication by keeping a daily progress journal, daily minor meetings and weekly major meetings with the team leader, and punctual with initial training sessions received from colleagues.

• Independently researched a microfluidic device capable of assaying drug candidates to investigate cell death pathways (apoptosis and autophagy) toward cancer treatment, mastered the design of two different proof-of-concept microfluidic devices and designed a model device which laid the foundation for further projects.• Practiced and perfected microfluidic techniques such as curing PDMS on microfluidic moulds, assembly of microfluidic layers, and installation of fluid inlets and outlets; ensured leak-free operation of microfluidic devices which led to highly controlled thesis experiments.• Trained in equipment and procedures dealing with aseptic tissue culture of mammalian cell lines, bio-safety cabinet operation, and fixing and dying cells.• Experienced with wide-field microscopes to image cells in petri dishes and microfluidic devices, and with scanning electron microscopes to image and measure the length of microfluidic mould features.• Communicated regularly with the supervising professors about direction of the thesis and the planning of future steps.• Studied the intersection of a broad range of subjects involving microfluidics, optics, and biochemistry• Clearly and concisely wrote experimental procedures for research students to learn from and replicate.• Performed deconvolution of wide-field microscopic images of cells with ImageJ software, to eliminate out of focus objects.• Utilized MATLAB to analyze data of images in desired regions of interest, and to export that data into Excel.

Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada

• Analyzed the performance of a geothermal closed loop system that was situated in the Northern Ontario region. The first part of the project was focused in studying the viability of integrating a geothermal heat exchanger for Northern Ontario. A small scale geothermal heat pump simulator was to be characterized based on real data.• The second part of the project focused on the case study at a site near Musselwhite Mine. By the measurement of ground temperature profiles from the Musselwhite Mine site, and by intensive tests and analysis the team was able to successfully finalize a geothermal design for the Musselwhite Camp site.

Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada

• With a team of students, planned a potential weather and ground temperature monitoring station at a remote gold mine in northern Ontario. Over three days at the mine, essential geographical and geological information was gathered, and determined the appropriate site for the monitoring station that was installed the following October.• Developed a testing matrix for the cooling performance of a solar powered refrigeration system, measured the response via thermocouples and digital multi-meters, which accelerated the supervising professor's study for publication.
